Labradoodle & Goldendoodle Forum

Hello all! I am new to this site and thought I would start getting a little more active. The other night I was giving Bella, my 6 month old goldendoodle, her nightly belly rub. As she was sitting there my hand discovered a large lump on her back/shoulder area that I had never noticed before. I examined the area further and found it was HUGE, it was bigger then the palm of my hand. It was also very soft, felt like it was filled with liquid. I became extremely worried as any dog owner would.

I called the vet as soon as they opened the following morning and took her right in. The vet seemed concerned and wanted to keep her to draw a sample and look at it under the microscope. A few hours later I got a call that she drew 15ml of blood but that there was still plenty in there. She diagnosed it as a hematoma and thinks it could've been caused by the microchip she had put in the previous week. The week before Bella was spayed and microchipped. Bella is my first dog so I really don't know much about this. She has been on an antibiotic and it definitely has gone down, but is still rather large. It's also getting a little bit harder than it originally was. I have also been hot packing it 3 times a day as instructed by the vet. She isn't bothered by it at all so that is good! :) Does anyone on here have any experience with this? I've been trying to search on the internet but I thought I would try this site out! I am going back to this vet with her this week to have it looked at again so I will keep you all updated.

This is a picture I just took. Kind of hard to see, but the area on the right use to be raised as well. This is the area that has shrunk.

I'm also glad to hear that your pup is doing better with the hematoma, looking forward to seeing pics of your brothers doodle. Yours also reminds me of my Honey when she had a longer coat.

UPDATE:

I took Bella back to the vet today to check the progress of the hematoma. She measured it and it has shrunk to half the size it originally was. The doctor felt it and said it's extremely good that it it getting hard and more confined. This means the tissue it trying to reconnect and form back together. A few of you mentioned a hematoma can arise from shots and this is absolutely correct. When a needle hits a blood vessel and causes it to burst it can cause a pocket of blood to build up. I suppose this is how Bella got hers, from the needle used for her microchip. After the vet it was a nice hot day here in Florida so Bella was treated to some doggy ice cream! Thank you all for your responses. :)

My son had a hematoma from an injury - playing on swinging chairs and fell on his face!!! This lasted for several years and gradually was reabsorbed.

I have heard that many dogs will develop a lump in the shoulder blade area where they receive their shots but am told that it is nothing to worry about, that they will go away.

I've never heard of anything like that, but Shiloh was neutered and microchipped recently....I am going home to feel him to make sure everything is normal.

I did have a problem with Hannah, but it was not micro chip releated. Hannah had a lump on her back right between her shoulder blades for about 8 to 10 months and it was moveable, she developed this after recieving a puppy shot. I was really getting concerned because it took so long to go away. I know Hematoma's with people are caused from injuries, and they form a blood pocket that usually desolves on their own. Did the vet tell you to use Ice and Hot packs on it, they should also be checking and making sure that micro chip is still in the right spot and working properly. I was thinking of having Honey done, but she is not being spayed right away, so it will be done awake...scarry ...

I have no experience with this at all but my first thought would be to get a 2nd vet to check it out if you don't see a major shrinkage by Friday. Did the vet check to make sure the chip is still in the same spot? Sometimes they do move. Keep us posted
