Labradoodle to the Rescue!!

DOG SUFFERS RATTLE-SNAKE BITES TO SAVE OWNER

Just last month in Sierra Vista, Ariz., a Labradoodle named Phillip (pictured left) saved his new owner, Linda Reynolds (also pictured left), and her other dog, a Labradachshund, from a rattlesnake that invaded Reynolds' sun porch. According to an article in the Sierra Vista Herald, "The 11-month-old chocolate Labradoodle placed himself in harm’s way as he nudged Reynolds and Jake [Labradachshund] clear of an armoire, underneath which the poisonous snake had taken up residency."

Phillip suffered two bites to the head, two to his legs, and one to his chest. Reynolds failed to notice the dog was injured until later in the evening at which point Phillip's body swelled, he was drooling, and he was having difficult breathing. She called a vet only to learn that the treatment would cost $2000 and would not necessarily work. So instead of getting Phillip help, she laid with him all night, expecting the worse. Unusual decision when you consider the selfless, protective action the animal had just done for her.

Amazingly, Phillip made it through the night, and Reynolds began calling friends eventually taking the recommendation from one to try a topical treatment, DMSO, or dimethyl sulfoxide. The treatment worked; Phillip's swelling has diminished significantly and there is no sign of infection.

Needless to say I am not surprised at the cowardly behavior of the Labradachshund in regard to the rattlesnake. Leave it to a poodle-mix to step up and save the day.

Truly heroic I know--good thing I didn't have time to think about it. Also glad to know someone else mows the lawn.

YES, we have snakes in OHIO. More than most know. A few years ago I thought I was going to brush up against a large tree branch with the lawnmower. IT--the branch, jump 4 feet in the air and slithered on. Possibly it escaped? Or it lives here? Don't want to ever see him again!

Don't they have snakes in Ohio. We sure do in NJ. the worst I've had in my garden are garter snakes though. Luca came across one last spring. More to protect the snake then him, I actually picked it up so I could get it outside the fence.

Wow, how in the world did she not know he'd been bitten??? We have rattlers here, and it is my worst fear that Gus or Molly will come across one. I even have the emergency vet number in my cellphone so I can call them while on the way, so as not to waste any time. My neighbor was bitten, and he said it is really painful. Some of those bites must have been "dry" bites (no venom released) because surely the dog would have died after being bitten that many times. That poor dog deserves a better mom.

Ok, I agree with everything said here, but I'd also have to add "I'd have to move"! I don't do snakes!

I want to say "what a b-tch" but that isn't appropriate so I won't.

Totally agreed she should have taken him to the vet! It speaks for the Labradoodle not the owner that's for sure!
