Today I found out just what Banjo's made of. Just as I'd suspected...he's completely "opportunistic". This morning I took him out to the backyard to play in the snow. After a good 30 minutes of tossing snowballs for him we headed for the back door. I didn't have a leash on him and so I held his collar and started on to the ice slicked patio to the door. Well, as you've probably already guessed...I took a header, hitting my head, shoulder and knee. There I am sprawled out in pain and all I could think of was I've got to get the door open and usher him inside before he takes off. I managed to reach up and open the door with my good hand and luckily Banjo went willingly inside at which point I slithered over the threshold, closing the door behind me.
Safely inside, now I could succumb to the pain. I couldn't help but moan and cry, all the while wondering if my arm was broken and my knee shattered.....surely they must be for it to hurt this badly. While all of this was going on, Banjo was running madly up and down the stairs. I think he stopped to look at me two or three times. In the midst of the pain I was thinking to myself....oh the poor thing is frightened and upset and doesn't know what to do. Well, after about 5 minutes I attempted to move my leg.....YES! .... it worked! Holding my bad arm against my body I managed to get up of the floor and slowly worked my way up the stairs. At this point I hear Banjo running madly about the upstairs and it slowly begins to dawn on me.....these are the crazy, manic pawsteps of Dog Gone Wild....you know that sound .....when your dog has something he shouldn't have and is running crazily around the house with it....taunting you to catch-me-if-you-can!!!
It seems that while I lay there thinking my body was broken beyond repair, Banjo had discovered the socks, underwear, pajama bottoms and tee shirts that were left on the laundry room floor and had brought each and every item up to the living room to bask in. He never gave one thought to my well being. It never occurred to him to push the phone off the cradle to try to dial 911, or to lay loyally by my side, licking my tears til DH came home! Nope! It was PARTY time!!!!
Sort of sounds like the Captain of that ill fated cruise ship!
Footnote: Looks like I'll be ok...knee is bruised, little lump on the forehead and as long as I keep my arm close up against my body it doesn't scream with pain. Sitting here with ice on it.

UPDATE:
Feeling a whole lot sore today, in places I didn't know I had but I'm pretty sure nothing is broken and I'll be good as new after a few more days. Thanks all for the well wishes!
As for Banjo....Well I've come to the conclusion that I may have misunderstood his seeming indifference during my mini-crisis yesterday.
For almost as long as we've had him, he will grab a forbidden item and run around playing Catch-Me-If-You-Can. He typically does this when we're not paying him much attention....and he's got us so well trained that we jump right in to play the game. Running around til we catch him and then he'll drop whatever he's been taunting us with.
After some thought last night it dawned on me that he was trying to get me to get up off the floor and chase him. When the first stolen article of laundry didn't work...he went for another item....on and on! He did stop by my head a few times, although I wasn't really paying him any attention, he was probably trying to show me what he had in his mouth. His doggie attempts to entice me up off the floor! So, you see.....he really is a Lassie!!! Or a Doodle Super-Hero!

LOL, and don't you just love him? :-) Hope you heal fast, Carol.
Holy Doodles Carol. I just checked in to see how you were doing. This is not good. I so hope that this is not going to ruin your vacation. Love this "out of the border" picture of "Bad To The Bone Banjo". I'm sorry, but I'm not totally sure if he was really being "Lassie" or taking full advantage of the fact that his Mom couldn't chase him....oh forget that, I've spent too much time with Murph....I'm a bit cynical. Feel better!
Carol, Pineapple, coconut, rum, Oh My! Pineapple, coconut, rum, Oh My!
Yak Trax are available at Amazon... then some of the price can go to DK.
It's funny I have them somewhere and I have never used them. Next icy day I think I will.
Bonnie and Donna....I love the prescription you've written! Drinks sound perfect!
Thanks F.....I'm hoping for a sling. I'm a bit concerned about possible tendon or muscles tears ... I'll be thrilled if it's just the fracture. Dr. gave me prescription for pain med but I'm not having unbearable pain...just discomfort. As long as I hold it close all is good. Margaret I have those...and LIVED in them last winter, however this winter's been so mild I hadn't brought them out yet. You can bet I don't leave home without them now. : ) They're amazing and I highly recommend them. They can be bought at Walmart...perhaps not the same brand but something similar.
Bonnie they are great! I have two meniscus tears in my knee, and I'm fearful of falling in the snow/ice. I have the Yak Trax one which I prefer, and then I have another pair that has spikes on the bottom, Those work good too, but they somehow move on the bottom of my boot. So some of those spikes by the end of my walk may be slipping up the side of my boot.
@Margaret. My parents live in Wisconsin and I have considered getting them but was unsure as to the value. Thanks for letting me know you like them. I've seen some in the LLBean catalogue.
So sorry about your fracture. I live in Ohio where we get snow, and I always walk like a little old lady, well at 55 I am an old lady! Anyway, last winter I ordered from QVC, I'm sure any sporting goods store would have them, they are called WinterTrax, and they stretch over the bottoms of your boots. I can walk on a pure ice area, and not have to worry about falling or sliding. I know this is after the fact, but I highly recommend them.
So sorry about the fracture but none displaced is good. Let us know what the orthopedic guy says.
