There's something about the pitch that James Dean uses in that scene that started my dog howling; in fact, she responded to that more than to actual sirens. But maybe that was just her.

No interest in Rebel Without a Cause.  She might have looked up for a split second then went back to what she was doing.  Also I tried the Law and Order theme song, which I've heard many dogs that howl will howl to but got no response.  She seems to know the difference real sirens and recordings.
