We microchip all of our rescue dogs and register the microchip with Free Pet Chip Registry https://freepetchipregistry.com/

We use this service because it is (as the name indicates) free.  We register the rescue dog in our Maltese Rescue California name, rather that just advise the adopter to register the dog.  That way, the new owner can transfer registry to his/her name or if the owner neglects to register the dog, that dog is still registered under our name.  We have a data base of dogs which includes their chip number.

Yesterday, I received a phonecall from Free Pet Chip Registry that Jack had been found and was at a Pet Hospital.

We cross referenced the chip number and found the adopter.  I called him and told him that Jack was safe in the pet hospital near his home.

He told me that he had been frantically looking for the dog all morning.

We sincerely recommend microchipping as a low cost way to ensure the safe return of any lost dog!

Hooray for Jack and his owner! Great news!

And microchips work when the outcome is not as happy.  Our daughter's dog got out when she was pet sitting.  Subsequently he was hit by a car and identified by his chip and she was notified.  Unhappy, but at least there was closure.
