My 3 year old goldendoodle just suffered from bloat!!!

'Hi Just some info for everyone who has a goldendoodle, my large 3 year old male suffered from bloat monday night and almost died. Luckily he received surgery in time and was saved. He is still in recovery and will takes weeks for him to get back to normal. I would like everyone to be aware of this horrible condition which kills dogs within hours. He was acting very strangely, he was dry heaving, walking around in circles than he went and hid under my deck. He finally came out and collapsed and started crying. We rushed him to the er and they had to quickly operate. Thank god he is ok, I am putting this out there cause I hope no one or no dog has to go through this and owners can be aware of the signs and catch it in time. He is the most wonderful dog and I can not imagine my life without him!! '.

Hi Nicole,

I realize it's been a while since your doodle had bloat but I was wondering if you had any issues since? My Goldendoodle, Sprocket, had bloat last week (twice in 2 days). Basically it seemed to be a fluke since Sprocket hadn't done anything that would promote an incident (i.e. eating fast, exercising after eating, drinking large amount of water, etc). However, he always seemed to have issues with digestion (throwing up, belching, horrible breath, etc) and due to this, we have tried many foods (grain free, chicken free, etc). My vet now has him on a mixture of wet and dry Medi-cal gastro intestinal food (on it since his surgery for easy digestion) but this food has all the no-no's that are listed on the prevention of bloat (fat in first 4 ingredients, chicken meal as first ingredient (in the dry), citric acid as a preservative, etc). What have you been feeding your doodle since the incident and if there are any other suggestions you can give me, I'd very much appreciate it!!! Sprocket did have the tacking surgery after his first incident which saved him from the second and more severe attack. Thanks! Mandy and Sprocket

Hi Nicole -
My 5 year old labradoodle just had bloat last Wednesday & had surgery... We were out of town for Christmas, and he was at the kennel. They saw something was wrong, took him to his vet, he had surgery, and he came home last night. We feel very lucky, and are so grateful to the staff at his kennel and at the vet who took care of him....
I hope yours had a speedy recovery and has been doing great since he had it in March...

Cody and I are so glad your pup is one the mend. Although Cody is only 8 months old, Bloat is something I worry about as he eats VERY VERY fast. I have already ordered the new "bloat" bowl. I hope it works.

Nicole, bravo to you for being so alert to what the pup was going through. I'm so glad you caught it in time- and thanks for sharing this with us!

I'm so sorry to hear that but glad you caught it in time. Our Vet recommended preventive surgery but the breeder advised against it. We all need to be watchful, when bloat occurs they need medical care within a
half hour for the best outcome.

I'm so glad to hear he is okay! That's just the scariest thing because it happens SO fast and without any warning.

I'm so glad you caught it in time. Our friend's dog had this happen, and he didn't make it. It was years ago, and they lived out in the country, so it took too long to get to the ER. It's definitely something you have to act quickly on, so it's a good thing you took him straight to the ER. It will be a long recovery, but at least he's still with you.

So sorry you and Emmit went through such a scary ordeal. I'm very glad that you were able to get him help in time and he pulled thru. Hopefully you will never have to deal with it again. A friend of mine's dog had a bout with bloat and pulled thru. Her vet told her to keep a large bottle of Maalox with her and if her dog ever showed symptoms again, to try to get as much Maalox in him as possible to help cut down on the gas while transporting to the ER. I never heard that before but my doggie bag now contains a bottle of Maalox - just in case. Best wishes for a full and speedy recovery.
