Oh dear, we practiced with Pongo on the lead today as we are going away at the weekend when he will finally be allowed to walk out in the countryside!! Hmm..... slight difficulty in getting him to walk. He point blank refuses.. and when I try to guide him (drag him) he cries like never before... I've posted a discussion to try and get some help with this... my own fault really for not trying him with the lead much before... I didn't anticipate this much hassle!!!

Hi S&P Get yummy treats & lure him forward. Throw treats ahead. Smelly ones are good like blue cheese but liver is the best. Don't drag him. Tell him how good he is when he walks forward. Clicker training is the best. Go to www.clickertraining.com Puppy love from Joy & furry folk

Thank you for your replies! I've just been telling my mum all about Pongo and his lead and put it on him to show her how he is.... sure enough he didn't murmur!! Making me out to be a liar LOL! I think it may have been because there was someone there and his attention was a little distracted.... It was certainly a massive improvement on how he was earlier so I will keep persisting and try again later.. He is quick to learn with other things so hopefully he'll learn quickly that the lead isn't his enemy!

Put the lead on him at home and let him get used to that. Let him drag it around. Do you have a neighbor with a dog. If so, try to go for a walk with another dog. That really speeds up the matter. I actually tie Lucy to Fergie and let her take her for a walk. Sounds awful but it really works.

Toby was not an automatic walker either, and unfortunately, it took a while to sort out. I think it's just not natural for them to walk with the lead on. I agree with the peanut butter on a long wooden spoon - I had some success with that. And for us, a "walk" at first was one or two houses down, and back. He just wanted to go HOME. :) Hope Pongo sorts things out more quickly than Toby did.
