Labradoodle & Goldendoodle Forum

Thank you everyone for the comments you left on the discussion and blog that I posted about wanting to get a second doodle. We have decided against it... unfortunately. We canceled the appointment we had with the breeder as well because we knew if we even went to see those puppies we would want one.

So I pretty much felt that at this point in our lives we were not financially ready to have another dog. I want to be able to care for Remington and another dog the best that I can. I would never want to just do it half way. Dan and I love Remington with all our hearts and the thought of not being able to provide him something that he needs would break both our hearts.

Also, we really need to think about all the other things we need that will be coming up soon. Such as wedding/honeymoon stuff... furniture for the house... stuff for school... etc. etc. etc. If I have even a little bit of doubt about getting another dog then I have no business getting one. Even though I really would have liked another one... there was something that kept pulling me back... (Maybe my mother's voice in my ear) HA!

So for right now our search for another doodle is on hold. But it is nice to be able to refer back to all your posts and comments about the pros and cons of a 2nd doodle! Thank you!

When the time is right maybe a rescue dog will need you!! Starting out with a puppy for Remington is not the only choice you have, Watching a group of doodles play is amazing, the enthusiasm and energy is amazing. He (and you) can easily bond with an adult doodle, when the time is right for all of you!!

I agree with your decision. A very wise and mature one. Give yourself and your soon to be hubby some time together. Enjoy your Remington. Easier to find a sitter for one dog. Your Mom rocks.

Kendra, right after Marc and I got married we immediately wanted to get a puppy. We didn't know what kind we wanted, we just knew that we wanted a big breed. We went back and forth over great danes, weimaraners, and boxers, but we never could come to a compromise. I can't tell you how greatful I am that we didn't get a puppy right after getting married! First of all, we ended up doing a good bit of traveling, and my parents were able to keep my dachshund, but a new doodle would've been too much for them. Most importantly, Marc and I had never even heard of Goldendoodles before last November. So if we had not waited, we would've completely missed out on this wonderful breed and our Wrigley! All of that to say, waiting can definitely be worth it!

Oh, Kendra, I knew I LIKED you!!! You are so right. You will know when it is right. And I know that some day it will be the right time. You know that you want one, so now you will know when it is time to do the puppy thing again. Just as I believe that spouses and children are meant or not meant for "you" so is a certain puppy. Out there is puppy dreamland. One day Remington will have a playmate and it will work. I, like others, could not imagine going through puppyhood with two at the same time. I guess it is like twins or triplets or QUADSSS. You never expect it, you don't really plan for it but you do the best if it happens. Here you have a choice. I applaud your decision while completely understanding the desire to have another. The kids had already asked for a second even though we haven't brought Cimmy home, yet. I've told them maybe next year. I, too, want two. Just not now. You have made a wise move. Betsy

Kudos, I think at this time in your life you have made a very wise decision. Although my heart aches for a 2nd. doodle I keep weighing all of the pros and cons and keep coming up with more and more reasons why Lucy is probably going to be my only doodle love for now. Just pour all of you love out to Remington and someday when it is right you will get a 2nd.

Kendra, you truly are wise beyond your years. It can be very hard to make the right decision when your heart just wants to jump right into it without considering all the consequences. I remember feeling the "baby fever" when my youngest child was out of the baby stage; what you're feeling is not unlike that. Waiting until the right time to get your second pup is something you will never regret. Remington is one lucky boy to have you as his mom.

I think you knew this was the choice you were going to make ;o)

When and if the time is right you will know it and their will be no inkling of doubt anymore.

Now go hug that gorgeous Rem!

I think you made the right choice - I really do. You have lots on your plate and while I am sure you would manage a 2nd dog, you might not actually enjoy it right now. Getting a second dog is a great idea, but waiting won't be a bad thing at all. My dogs are about 5 years apart and they still play together etc. It will work out for you.

Sounds like you thought this through thoroughly (wow three "th" words in a row!) and made a wise decision Kendra. I am always dreaming of my next doodle (which will be a chocolate loosely curled beauty with light eyes and long eyelashes!) but whenever I spend time with Rosco I realize I'm not a tons-of-dogs kinda gal. I am most bonded to 1 of my 3 and there are some real joys and benefits to being a one-dog household. Not that I'll probably ever go down to 1 dog if I can afford 2...but there's awesome advantages to both sides.

Didn't comment before, but now I will...you made the right choice. You have forever to get your next puppy. When the time is right, there will be no shortage of wonderful puppies who would love to have Remington for a big brother.
