Portuguese Water Dog
I rarely see them in the summer! We have four males and at least one female. The birds have been cleaning me out this year like never before, going thru 25 pounds every 2 weeks, and I don't buy cheap seed, but I can't stop myself. Now I'm concerned I need to find some fancy bugs for the the bluebirds which should not be here! Oh the dilemma.. LOL
Oh, I wish we had bluebirds here!!
No feathers ruffled here. I think we all agree that Doodle hype is a bad thing and the woman pushing the dog on the Trumps makes no sense to me. I am just tired of all the Political stuff being posted, but it seems that wasn't the case here. Thanks for clearing that up, Sharon!
Ok kids, sorry I didn't mean to ruffle any feathers, the article just didn't sit right with me and I will repeat that I worry too many people without doing their homework, or looking at their situations if they really are ready for a dog is what I was aiming for, and way too many people will long for a dog. just. like. the. president. And I think Karen's recent notation speaks for itself.
I just deleted a long comment. I don't know the poster's original intent, so I am going to leave this alone.
Yesterday, DRC received a record number of requests to join the website. Every single one of them cited Fox news for the question "where did you hear about us?" I went to the Fox news webpage and sure enough, there had been a TV segment on the President-elect's new Goldendoodle yesterday. I was happy to see that they did have a vet on the show who disputed the "they don't shed, they're hypoallergenic" crap and cautioned people about that; however, every person who asked to join the DRC site cited "hypoallergenic" as one of the reasons they were interested in a doodle.
PWDs are still relatively rare, and their breed clubs are extremely well-organized and proactive. You would be hard-pressed to find a PWD breeder who is not extremely discriminating about who gets her pups, and the puppy mills are still not producing PWDs in any number. We all know the same is not true of doodles. PWDs were also never touted as "perfect dogs" to the masses; on the contrary, the national breed clubs go out of their way to educate prospective buyers on the extremely high energy levels, need for a "job", and extensive grooming requirements. There is no false hype out there about them, and no lies about service work. Again, we know the same is not true of doodles. (FYI, there are NO doodles serving as military dogs, and there never have been.) This is why disaster did not befall PWDs as a breed when the Obamas acquired one.
I think there is a BIG difference between a young couple getting their first dog "for the kids" and a 70 year old and 40-something-year old couple with unimaginably busy lives getting a first dog "for the kids". Also think there is a big difference between the homes that Archer and most of us grew up in, and a penthouse in the middle of Manhattan, which is where the Trumps' son lives. DRC would not adopt a dog under these circumstances regardless of who the people are or what their politics might be, because DRC is concerned with the dog, period, and not with the people. That is my concern as well.
I also get the problem about Doodles and their popularity skyrocketing, but like Stella, I don't remember this happening with the PWD. Ideally, the world would be a better place if we all adopted our dogs from a shelter, but since I didn't do that, I can't very well judge someone else who doesn't do it either.
