So a person who has never had a dog before should never get a dog? Or is this because it is Donald Trump? I am not getting into politics on DK, but I will say, I couldn't stand either candidate this election. That said, I watched several of the conventions and although I don't like the persona I see of Donald Trump on TV, I was struck how much all of his kids seem to love him and vice versa. I also believe a dog can change a person for the better. My son-in-law did not want a dog. My daughter was the driving force behind them getting one and now they have two and my SIL is a wonderful dog owner and loves the dogs dearly. Trump also has a young son and I know the comfort our Hershey gave to our daughters. Our one daughter dealt with a lot and Hershey was her rock and loved her unconditionally. Maybe that little boy, whose life is about to be turned upside down, could use a friend at this time in his life. I am so sick of all this political stuff and the spin the media puts on every little thing.....for both sides. I also hope politics stays off DK.

How did the PWD do after the Obama family got theirs? I remember there bent lots of concern when they chose the breed, but don't really remember hearing any fallout? I totally agree Trump shouldn't have any dog, but doodles already get so much bad press and there are so many bad breeders that it could lead to disaster.

Not just that they ended up in shelters, but the puppy mills went to town cashing in on the craze, and the blood lines were trashed. Same with Cocker Spaniels in this country after Lady & the Tramp. Publicity and popularity are never a good thing for any dog breed.

I DO agree that whatever breed a President has, becomes a popular breed and that's not always a good thing. It's the same with movies. Remember everyone wanted Dalmatians after "101 Dalmatians"? People didn't understand they were buying a high energy dog and so many of them ended up in a shelter. So sad.

I read the article. We'll have to agree to disagree. My parents had to be talked into getting us kids a dog when I was a child. Sometimes I believe Mom and Dad loved the dog more than us! He definitely became a "spoiled baby" (and my parents never had a dog before). (As I said, President Johnson was the worst! The horrors watching him lift his dogs off the ground by their ears. He did it all the time. In today's world, he wouldn't get away with doing that. If you aren't old enough to remember Pres. Johnson doing that, consider yourself lucky because it was pathetic.

Sally, if you read the article, you'll see that the idea of getting a dog is something that Mr. Trump is basically being talked into, or in her words, "pushed into" by a friend, for the son, and not because he or his wife have any real love or even knowledge, of dogs. No dog should go to anyone who has to be talked into owning him.

I don't get it. Trump shouldn't have a pet/dog? What's that about? The only president that shouldn't have had dogs was President Johnson. I cringed every time he picked his beagles up by the ears! That's animal abuse, in my opinion.
