Our vet has recommended OTOBAN odor eliminator and disinfectant.  Apparently this will kill both bacteria and viruses as well as neutralizing odors.

I found it at Home Depot in a concentrate for $9.00 a gallon.  Since it is a concentrate, the gallon goes a long way.

We use it for just about every pet related clean up because it will kill giardia as well as other infectious things.  We even spray our cement and lawn area, after picking up the feces, whenever a shelter rescue dog poops.

This is just to be sure.  We also clean the travel kennels in which we transport the dogs...

It is easier to use, safer on the environment and does a better disinfecting job than bleach.  It smells a lot better also!

I'm a big fan of bleach myself.

Which scent was used? Many people find the eucalyptus very strong. They also have a citrus and a lavender scent. Maybe the high concentrations was the problem. The bottle has definite dilution instructions. Actually,  bleach is very caustic and irritating. I have had problems with the smell of bleach. Any cleaning chemical needs to be used with caution, care and common sense.

Honestly, this stuff makes me sick. I'm very familiar with the product as my last job used it in high concentrations. My husband and I both resigned because of its use. It bothered him too- to the point he resigned first. Note: my husband, from a broken nose, has a limited sense of smell.
It is listed as a non carcinogen with caution as an eye and inhalent irratent. Vapors should not be breathed, do not get on skin.
As for its smell, the FDA does not regulate what is put in product as an aroma. It's the smell that got to us.

Good old fashion bleach is still the best product around

I use Odoban for many things in my home. I've wondered how pet safe it is. I am sure to let it dry completely before allowing any dog in the area.
