We learned about this approximately 9-month old Maltipoo who was in the Morena Valley, California (near Riverside) Animal Shelter. She had not been adopted because she was too ragged and filthy and she was too scared in the shelter to allow their volunter groomer to work on her. So it was a "Catch-22" no adoption out of the shelter until she was clean and no bath as long as she was in the shelter and scared stiff...
However it was just fear that caused her to growl. We don't rescue dogs who have a history of biting because of the liability insurance which we keep. But, when I met her, she allowed me to pick her up and look at her teeth to determine her age. No growling or biting! She was just shaking like a cheap motel bed with a coin massage slot!
I had her in a travel kennel in the passenger seat on the approximately 50-mile trip from Morena Valley to home. I talked to her throughout the trip and occasionally put my finger through the door to get to know her and more importantly to let her get to know me. When I arrived home, I removed her from the kennel and found tht she wasn't shaking a bit.
As I write his, Judy is grooming her with no poblem. However, my hoodie needs a serious trip thru the washer. Boy, did this girl stink. Next up - A picture of Valley Girl (that's what I named her) after a bath and a little TLC...

ANOTHER NEW RESCUE AND HER FAMILY... This is Katie and her five puppies (of yet undetermined parentage - you make a guess!). The Kern County, CA, Shelter has a wonderful proactive program in which they contact rescue groups from all over California and drive the rescue dogs to where the rescue group can pick them up. We picked up Katie and her five puppies (4-boys and 1-girl) in Oceanside, CA which is about sixteen miles from our home. I wish that I had brought a video camera because Katie came rolling up in a big blue panel truck with Kern County Animal Rescue and dog and cat picures painted all over it.
Any this is our entry baseline picture of Katie. She is as dirty and matted as we expect a shelter dog to be...
However her five puppies are squeekie clean so she must be good mom!
We have two other rescue groups who will help us foster some of the puppies after Katie weans them...
Richard, your devotion to rescue is wonderful and an example of volunteerism that we all should strive to reach.
sooo cute! Thanks for rescuing this little sweetie.
She's going to the vet tomorrow to be spayed. It looks as if she is fairly well housetrained. At least she goes potty every time I bring her out. Housetraining is a great boon for rescue dogs.
BTW" we are getting a Maltese with a litter of five puppies on Thursday. They are being brought down from the Kern County Shelter which Is terribly overcrowded.
I just wish people would spay and neuter their pets and stop this unwanted breeding... But that is a pie in the sky wish!
She is just beautiful, Richard. What a treasure she will be for someone.
wow. very impressive. it is hard to tell that that is even the same dog.
Oh my goodness. What a little cutie you have there!!
