PLEASE please tag and chip (and spay/neuter) your dogs

I picked up yet another stray dog yesterday on my morning hike with the doods - I think this will be the 6th or 7th loose dog I have had to bring home in the past couple of years. This one was wearing a collar, but - of course - no tag. Took him to the local vet who scanned for chip - nothing. Brought him back home, gave him water and food. Started the usual process of creating flyers, posting ads on Craigslist, emailing everyone I know locally, calling the shelters etc etc. Well, the owner just called this morning and the dog is now back home. I admit to chewing her up a bit after learning that this is not the first time this dog has escaped. He was a big male Samoyed mix who apparently never gets exercised and has a tendency to roam. So why wouldn't the owner at chip him or at least put a cheap tag with a phone number on his collar??? And to top things off, he wasn't neutered. ARGHHHH, some people just should NOT own dogs when they cannot be responsible for them!!

I would be tempted to chip him myself since I was already at the vet scanning and then when the owner wants the dog tell him it's a $25.00 reward charge ( the cost of the chip).

While we are on the subject, I have noticed numerous Cats who have been micro-chipped! Good for those owners.

I can't imagine KNOWING your dog gets out and roams and not having a tag. Only with the acquisition of Ned have I chipped my dogs (a bit slow on getting with the program eh). I still do not have my old guy chipped, but you can bet he is tagged even though I know he will not roam.

I don't understand why they can't put a simple collar and tag on the dog. They aren't expensive! Why aren't they worried about him not having identification? Grrr... some people shouldn't be allowed to own dogs.

I think it's really great that you did all this....I hope the owner was grateful (but probably not). I'm guessing part of the reason he is roaming is that he's not neutered....that's as irresponsible as it gets.
