We just came home from Pre- Spaying exam at our vet's office. ( Charlie's appointment date is Thursday, May 28th, she will be 5 1/2 months old)
We have been going to Dr. Sweeny for a about 14 years now with my older dog, and I do trust him.
And this is why I chose to have this done by him rather than at the local low cost spay clinic.

But I am just so anxious and fearful of what could go wrong!!
So, please... big girls' moms out there, would you please tell me about your positive spaying experiences?...... :(

Hi, Not to make you nervous, but to prepare you...Sadie stayed overnight and came home the next day. She seemed fine, not wozzy. Around 10pm that night she started acting very strange, running around in circles, crying, trying to go outside. By midnight, she was acting really hyper and scaring me. I took her to an 24 hour vet hospital. They said that she was showing all the signs of extreme pain. They gave her a shot of morphine (for dogs?). She calmed down about 2 hours later...we were at the vets for probably two hours before she got the shot. The emergency hospital vet told me that vets err on the side of too little pain medication. She said that the pills they gave her were the equivalent of aspirin. So, she gave me a much stronger pain killer. I gave this medicine to Sadie for two days and she was then ok. Just ask you vet what to do if you see signs of extreme pain. I was clueless and it wasn't described anywhere on the sheet of aftercare instructions.
Maybe I have a dog with a low tolerance for pain...better to know what to be prepared for than not!

Thanks Chris. I guess I will do that on Tuesday just to be on the safe side.
I want to make sure that her blood will clot right and does not bleed excessively.
My cousin's dog ended up passing away during the surgery because she would not stop bleeding, and her blood will not clot at all.... That was really sad and scary.

Hey Kyoko - I had the blood drawn on Fozzy too! It is required by my vet. I guess it can't hurt.

Thank you all!!
All of your comments made me feel much better!
Dr. Sweeny plan to keep her over night as his routine, but I will make sure that someone is going to be there.
He said that if I was really worry that something will go wrong, he can do the blood test to make sure the things looks good on Tuesday, 2 days before the surgery. I am not sure if that would be necessary or not.
Adrianne, did you put a t-shirt on her so she will not bother the stiches?

Samantha came through it with flying colors!! She never touched her stitches and all I had on her was a t-shirt! I brought her home that afternoon but didn't follow vet advice - I allowed her some water when she got home and she paid for my error by vomiting it up. So follow vet advice!! No food or water after midnight the night before also!

Oh, Kyoko, don't worry. Fozzy got neutered last Friday and when I picked him up, you would never know anything happened to him. He never skipped a beat. They suggested Rimadyl for the pain, which I give to Boomer for his arthritis, but I never had to give him anything, He did just great and it went wonderfully. BTW - a sibling of Fozzy had to stay overnight. If your vet wants her to stay overnight, make sure someone will actually be there. Otherwise I would advise taking her home.

Don't worry, it will be fine!

It's been awhile, but I've had two female puppies spayed, and no issues whatsoever. The worst thing I remember is that when my last girl stood up on her hind legs to greet me afterwards, it hurt and she yelped a bit. Other than that, piece of cake! It's natural to worry, when Jack had general anesthetic last winter I was a wreck. But Charlie is in good hands and will do just fine!

The good news is you have a long time vet that you trust. Believe me - we ALL go through that anxiety, especially with a first pup. Charlie will come through just fine. Most likely she'll be a bit loopy and hurting the first couple of days, but you'll be amazed how quickly she heals. We've learned that when the pup comes home, let her move to the spot she wants to be in and try not to bother her too much. Be there for her, but don't annoy her. She's gonna do great!

Riley had no issues what so ever and came home the same day from the Vet. He also had hurnea (an outie belly button) removed so that incision and scar was much larger than the neutering. He never used the cone, and no issues healing at all. He was very tired the night I brought him home but the next day was himself.
Don't worry, all will be fine.
