Riley is finally home!! She has been home for about 24 hours now and for the most part doing great! Right now she is sleeping in her crate, while I get a rest : )

Riley is 7 weeks old, ( I know a week younger than the breeder should have given her to us) so she is still very small. Last evening was filled with lots of playing, introducing her to our cat George (which was mostly a stare down) and cuddling. Riley went to bed at 11, woke up at 3 whining and then back to bed till almost 7 am. I think that is pretty good for her first night : ) I, however am exhausted!!

Today has been mostly wake up, go potty, play, cuddle and go back to sleep. Lots of naps!! Nice for me so that I can get in my shower and such. We have been trying to use these very small, chewy treats to reinforce when she goes potty outside and to teach her to sit but I dont think she likes them... she usually spits them back out. Any suggestions???

She also has been nipping a lot at our hands and feet. I read that this is becahse the puppies do this with each other in the litter? I have just been saying no, and giving her a toy instead..

Im not sure if this is because she is only 7 weeks or not... but it seems like we are literally taking her out for potty breaks every 15 mins so she doesnt go in the house!?? Was it like this for anyone else with their puppies???

Anyways, I am so totally in love with her... she definitely knows who her mama is : )

Welcome home Riley!  I do remember those 15 minute potty trip intervals too.  Luckily that phase doesn't last long.

Amanda, congrats on finally having your girl home with you!  Enjoy, this young pup stage does not last very long.  The joy they bring you lasts forever!

Sounds right on the money for 7 weeks, I remember at 9 weeks we were going out every 30 minutes.

Puppies are a lot of work but every minute you put in they give right back to you ten fold. The first year is theirs, 2nd year is easier and the other 15 is ours, so much unconditional love you just can't stand it. Daisy is an awesome dog, she was also an awesome puppy but we were really tired.
Enjoy!

Deanna - we also did this, we yelped like crazy when Stuart would nip and he stopped in 2 days.  I made it sound like I was really wounded.  LOL

Regarding the nipping - our trainer suggested that when puppy Sedona nipped at us that we yelp like a littermate might so that it helps calibrate the intensity of the biting.  It worked well, as Sedona quickly turned from "biting" into much more gentle mouthing.

Sounds all normal to me.  I expect the nipping this is as you say.  I got my Riley at nine weeks and he mouths but doesn't nip.  At seven weeks every 15 minutes sounds about right for potty breaks.  Very exhausting but it only lasts a short time.  Enjoy your new fur baby, they grow up all to fast.
