Ok, this is going to sound crazy. When I read your posting before this I actually wondered "I wonder if he has an allergy to something". Now I know that you normally don't think of the food allergies or allergies in general in dogs causing the throwing up, etc. I am DEATHLY allergic to anything with peanuts or tree nuts, anything made where nuts are, any cross contamination etc. I have stock in EpiPens and have been on a ventilator 4 times for it.
One on of the main symptoms I have and (many people with true food allergies will tell you) - after I can breath and don't need the help of a ventilator - is the stomach upset, throwing up, stomach bloating, and severe throat and gastric pain. Its caused from the spasms in your espophagus and stomach lining trying to rid your body of the allergin. Each time you are exposed to the allergin (food) your reaction is more severe.
I have done more reading and research on food allergies than you can imagine. Its more prevalent now than when I was growing up in the 70's (I have my theory on that but that's for another discussion LOL). There is a huge difference from a food intolerance to a true food allergy. Allergy testing for a food allergy to me is useless. You cannot get allergy shots to build up a resistance in a true food allergy. Personally, if you see the reaction with the peanut butter treat I wouldn't give it to him again and see how he does. Make sure nothing you are buying says manufactured around peanuts, etc. I cannot imagine that a dog could not have a food allergy with the same symptoms as a human - it just makes to much sense to me.
I pray that they can sort this out Jane. In the meantime, celebrate his near-normalness and do have some wine.
