Second try for NW1 Title in K9 Nosework for Buddy

WooHoo, Buddy and I earned our Nosework 1 title this month in Newbury Park CA.  It was the hottest day of the year so far, it got up to 90 degrees.  Nancy and Skip, of Nancy, Ned and Clancy, came to watch and cheer us on.  She provided our practice pictures with the boxes in the collage, thanks so much guys for being such great friends!

 

I could definitely tell the difference in his confidence at this trial, no hesitation, he was right on the scent!  He took third place out of 40 dogs in time on the Vehicle search, 9 seconds.  Skip and Nancy barely got in position to watch and we were already done :)  I think he could have taken 1st or 2nd if I hadn't looked at him and thought "really? already?"  I'm sure that took at least 2 seconds....

The interior was a breeze and the boxes too, it was the exterior I thought we might not get through this time.  There was grass, we hadn't work on grass before.  He's a boy, what if someone else had peed on the grass before us.  If they potty, you are disqualified.  I took him to everything but the grass and no interest.  Finally I gave him his head, he took me right to the scent.  I probably pulled him off 3 times of him leading me there.  But we still finished that search in 2 minutes, I'm so proud of him, his tail never stopped wagging, and everyone loved him.

Pat, you and Traveler will do great when you decide you are both ready!  The second time around I looked at it like training.  Let's find the hide Bud.  I also used chicken as his reward, that could have backfired but it didn't.  He knew he wasn't getting it until he put his nose on the source :)  Good luck to you guys in the ORT, I know you will do great.  Keep us posted.

Nancy and Skip, you guys are the best!  Thanks for the awesome photos, I was a little disappointed the NACSW photographers didn't post the other areas for our group, only the vehicle search.  I guess that's the only one that counts for us though, since he nailed that one for third place :)  Looking forward to April and June with you guys......

WE LOVED WATCHING YOU AND BUDDY.  He was decisive and knew exactly where the scents were located.  We all thought he was going to blow it with where the outside scent had been placed - he knew it was there, it was just the humans who thought he must be wrong - he wasn't.
