Short Update and Video

[Jen, Lachlan, and Declan]

Oh man, I'm exhausted here ... but in a good way! Declan's settling in quickly and Lachlan's over-the-moon happy to have a brother. Pixel's still pretty annoyed by the whole situation, but he'll come around over the next few days. He's curious about this new addition but extremely wary.

I'll admit it - I'm flabbergasted by this pair. My gast is thoroughly flabbered. Saturday morning Lachlan gave the dog bells at the back door a good yank, more slowly and deliberately than he normally does, all the while looking directly at Declan. I'm thinking "no way is he trying to show Dec how that works, he's just multi-tasking." Saturday afternoon Declan grabbed the bells and jerked on them. I'm thinking "he thinks they're a toy" but shot out of my chair and flung the door open, making much of what a smart puppy he is while he goes trotting proudly into the back yard. It wasn't until the third time he did that yesterday that I realized he had put it together and was purposefully saying "I want out."

He hasn't connected that with going to the bathroom out there yet, but I'm expecting that to take a couple'a weeks at minimum. The way he acts with toileting it's a good bet he lived outside and has never had to think about where he's going before. He needs some time to develop bladder and bowel control before he can put that together.

Lachlan's regressed a bit but I kinda expected that too. I didn't really expect "hey, I never even thought about chewing that before!" I'm just keeping my responses consistent and reminding him that even though he has a brother now it's still not appropriate to chew random stuff and he does still have to pay attention to me.

Watching them learn how to play with each other is a pure delight. Declan's way ahead at "keep away" so far; Lachlan has the edge at tug-o-war, although Dec flattens himself to the ground and makes Lach drag him across the yard. I just watch, marvel, and laugh!
