The other night I let Riley out for his nightly duties. We have a spot light that lights up most of the deck and yard. He went to the back edge of our deck and detected a critter in the unlit area behind the garage. There was about a distance of 15 feet between where he was and the unknown assailant lurked. He stopped in his tracks, and growled at the unknown critter. I was in the house, but watching his moves thru the French doors. It was a standoff. I don't know if it was a cat, raccoon or possum or what. But the more I watched this scenario, I got concerned if whatever it was came charging out he would be mentally ruined for life. Called him in, he came in at full tilt. After about an hour had to take him out again for his bedtime routine. He went out of the door about ten feet, turned and looked at me. So I walked out stood at the spot where he detected the critter. While I did this, Riley went to the opposite side of the yard to do his thing. Never, have had to stand guard while a dog did his business. Intelligent or CS?

I have a skunk story I could tell you some time!! I think it's nice to have a dog that gives you a heads up of a possible problem!

Intelligent, I heard a story not too long ago that a racoon attacked a lab by jumping on its back and it bit him thru the spinal cord and he died:( We always stand gaurd with the doods at night cuz of the nocturnal creatures including skunks.

We have a doggy door and my guys go tearing out to the back yard barking like crazy if they think there is a cat or a bunny out there.
