The Air Conditioning Vent Attacked Vern Last Night!

Last night, I was already in bed watching Dancing With the Stars, when Vern came running into the room like he had seen a ghost. Most people in my family know not to bother me when my favorite show is on, but from the looks of it, Vern did not get the memo. He looked so scared and happy to see me that I forgot momentarily what was happening on TV.  Pretty soon, in came my daughter to tell me what happened. Yesterday, it got very hot, so I turned on the air conditioner. I used to like to wait until later in the year to turn the a/c on, but that was before I got hairy dogs and I started having hot flashes unrelated to the outside temperature :) Vern and Fudge were ecstatic when the cooler air started flowing through our vents and Vern, never one to miss an opportunity to hog something that feels good to him, laid down right on top of the grate. He was sound asleep when my DD came home and when he tried to get up to greet her he was hindered by the fact that his dog tags had gotten stuck in the grate while he was snoozing. Well, we all know Vern is not the bravest dog in our house and he freaked out pulling the vent out of the floor. Since the vent was now attached to his collar like a giant dog tag, Vern made it clear with his thrashing and bucking that the vent would not remain permanently attached to his collar, if we cared at all about our possessions. My DD was able to unbuckle his collar, remove the grate, and that is when Vern made a beeline into my bedroom. He just needed a snuggle or two and he was ready to face the world, or at least that vicious vent.  However, he usually sleeps in the foyer, where the incident happened, but this morning I almost stepped on him when I got out of bed. I think he was making sure that vent didn't attack his loved ones. My brave Vern!!!

Now, see? If you had named him "MacGyver" instead of "Vern," he would have known how to get out of it.

Poor Vern - those vents are like Venus Fly Traps.

OMG I am laughing so hard I am literally crying! sorry to laugh at your horrific experience Vern, I am sure you could have taken that vent if it had come down to it.

I was just watching some pet show that said one of the highest fatalities for dogs was being strangled by getting their collars caught and strangling themselves on various things around the house.  Their recommendation was to not let them wear collars in the house.  So glad Vern is okay!

Oh poor Vern!  This happened to Murph last Summer too, and he "flipped out".  For the rest of the Summer I always made sure their collars were off whenever I left the house.....I was scared it might happen when I wasn't around.

That has happened to Jax twice. Both the vent and Jax were making such horrible noises that we all came running to see what was wrong.  However, Jax has not learned his lesson and still loves to lay on top the vent and hog all the cool air.

Thanks, everyone. Vern is doing great and seems to have no hard feelings about the vent.

Aww. poor Vern, another cowardly lion, lol, just glad he wasn't hurt in all seriousness...Isn't it amazing how they will ome to us for comfort, they know we are there for them, and to show you how much he loves you and appreciates you, he made sure that the vent didn;t get you during the night, lol...

I just keep the ID tag and the microchip tag on. We do have a separate license tag, which in itself confirms the rabies vaccination, but I keep that at home. Since anyone could contact me or the vet the rest could be easily clarified. Both my phone, address, vet # are on the ID tag which also says that the dog is vaccinated (unofficially).
