Labradoodle & Goldendoodle Forum

Lots of times here on DoodleKisses, I see members ask if they should stop crating their dogs at night. Many of those times, the dog is happy in the crate and it is the human who misses the doggie snuggling at night. Take my word for it, let sleeping dogs lie IN their crates.

In the summer, Fudge and Vern get too hot on any bed and prefer to sleep on the cold, hard floor. They might start up here on our bed for a little bit, but usually when my husband comes to bed, they want down and oh, how I wish some nights we could walk out to the foyer and say “crate” and in they would go.  Sure, I could start now, but I don’t have the heart.

The problem is once my husband makes the announcement “last call” Vern usually gets a second wind and likes to include us in the revelry.

So, my husband has two choices every night.

1) Try to squeeze his way into bed between these two and hope Vern stays asleep long enough for him to fall into a deep sleep so his wife can handle the nighttime activities.

2) Wake Vern and Fudge up and chance experiencing some of this:

or this:

or this:

or even this:

Since he usually goes with option one, what I wouldn’t give for two dogs that love their crate and long to sleep in there at night…..ALL NIGHT, EVERY NIGHT. Instead, we play musical beds almost every night and this morning I ended up with Vern and Fudge on our bed. Luckily, for me the 100 pound dog chose my side for his resting point and that meant I slept the remainder of the morning in a position that I have not been in since gymnastics camp at age nine. I just regained the feeling in my legs at lunchtime.

Deanna, I rarely let my kids get in bed with us. What does that mean? LOL Your daughter sounds like she needs the biggest bed they make.

F, What a cute picture. Who can blame him? Poor Calla....I hate those darn diets. Tell her you can't feel my ribs either...LOL. Vern is so much thicker than Fudge too...and his paws sound like Calla's.

Jane, You are back!! At least my two have not discovered our pillows. See what happens when you buy your dogs an adorable bed with a bone pillow....now they are used to the good life..LOL!

I am a terrible sleeper - I have enough trouble with human snoring and tossing-and-turning.  I'd never get any sleep if we had Sedona in bed with us!  SO glad she loves her crate.  My daughter, on the other hand, sleeps with her husband, her Yorkie, her Lab, and her baby.  How anybody gets any sleep there is beyond me!

This is what happens if your big lug of a sister takes your spot on the couch.

When last weighed Luca was 43 and Calla 63 pounds. Needless to say, since Calla has been on the Satisfaction austerity diet, I am sure she weighs less. I think there's a suggestion of ribs showing being felt. I do have to lock Luca's food in his crate or keep it with me until he deigns to eat it or Calla will help him out herself. She literally is much bigger boned then he is and taller. Her legs, if you pick one up, remind me of a Clydesdale horse.

Laurie - I feel your pain, these photos could be from our house too.  Rooney & Stuart have both decided that they like sleeping with their heads on our pillows, God help us if dh or I get up in the night because when you come back, your spot has been taken.  And good luck getting Stuart to move.
