Hey, some of you may remember my post about the dog that was howling and crying on the porch in the apartment below me. Well, it stopped for a couple of weeks but just started up again today. It has reminded me that I never updated you guys on what I found out. After leaving notes we finally talked to the guy, and found out that it was happening because the dog is/was in heat. (not sure if she still is and that is why the whining has started up again)

He has two dogs. A Husky and a German Wirehaired Pointer. Not sure which one is the female but when she went into heat he decided to keep her outside, crated, on the balcony while he was at work. All day, this included 2 thunderstorms and she didn't sound like she liked those at all. The male dog was inside, and I am guessing also unfixed... which probably made it even worse for both dogs. He didn't say he would stop it or anything, just told us why it was happening. I think it's rotten that he would keep his dogs in this situation. In fact, I'm checking our lease to see if intact dogs are allowed, I'm not even sure if they are. I guess I'm kind of at a loss now. About a week ago when he admitted to what was going on, the dog hadn't started up again. So it seemed resolved. But now that it's happening again I think I'll have to go have another discussion. Some people...

Anyways, in case anyone was curious. It has been sort of not really resolved... LOL

Lisa, you definitely did the right thing reporting that neighbor. That poop deck story sounded AWFUL.

I wonder if he's not getting her fixed cause he intends to breed....maybe that is how the conversation starts, if he says no, not breeding then give him the local information on low cost spaying, I am sure you have one they are everywhere now.

Remember my next door balcony "poop" situation? Well it's over now cause I turned her in to the association, she was sent a letter along with the picture. Of course the neighbor doesn't give me a second glance but I really don't care, I have enough friends - haha

Good Luck, what a horrible situation to be in.

I would talk to the manager about it-but maybe it was better not knowing! Good luck!

what a jerk. I wonder if you should maybe call the local spca/animal control. Keeping the dog in a crate outside (esp. during a storm) sounds like abuse to me. I know in my city in Ontario the authorities would be all over this. How awful. Poor dogs

Thanks for the advice all! this was really my dilemma, to talk to him or call management. I guess I feel like I owe it to him as a fellow dog owner to try and work it out without complaining.

BUT, he hasn't been open to that at all, has made excuses, etc. So I think I'm going to go ahead and talk to the management...

Jane - You said it perfectly.   It's a management problem.   I'd call daily until it's resolved.
