We once had a wonderful cat who did great with our dogs.  He was Holly's favorite friend. His mom had been feral and he was a giant, well over 20 pounds in his prime.

He was an excellent hunter and he cleared our property of vermin.  We enjoyed him very much and loved how he kept the mice and gophers away from our property.

We had him trained by feeding him only dry kitty food but, when we wanted him in the house, we would click a spoon on a can of cat food and he would come from anywhere in our property for a few licks of the food. He spent hours wandering our property with Holly and with Sara Lee, the big dog we had before Holly. Unfortunately Felix our cat succumbed to cancer at about twelve years old...

We are looking for a large cat and have pretty well decided on a Maine Coon because of their size and the way that they get along with dogs.  We will get one from a shelter because cats have very little chance of being adopted from a shelter and we feel that this is the right way to go about getting a cat.

Besides, even though we lived successfully with a cat before, rescue groups would take a dim view of adopting to us with all of out rescue dogs...

Richard, I've had outdoor cats and indoor cats.  Typically, outdoor cats live 2-4 years, where indoor cats 12 years or more.

I do believe that mice can detect a cat and just walk right by your house on to the next one, even if the cat is indoors.   I honestly do  :)   I hope you consider one indoors

I suppose though any home outdoors or indoors is good especially for so many homeless cats

Good luck on your cats. I have two that are now 18 years old  and I enjoy living with them so much

Do you believe the wrong cat can become the right cat if placed in the optimum environment? Just wondering... I know you'll find your right cat. Some lucky kitty's about to hit the lottery!

Good luck in your search, Richard, whoever you find will be a very lucky cat to be part of your family.

Good luck in finding just the right cat.

I have two cats and one doodle. My cats are both small for cats (the smallest cats I have ever had) around 8lbs each. Max is actually great with them, unfortunately the same can not be said for how the cats treat him but they are getting better! I could never live without a cat, they are wonderful creatures. I wish you lots of luck in finding a great cat to add to your family.

I wish you a wonderful new cat to add to your menagerie.  I am sure you will find just the perfect one at a shelter. We used to have cats but my kids were allergic, so once the last one passed away, we became catless.

Cats and dogs that are raised together get along just fine - as do other species that are raised together.  However, adding a cat to an established group of dogs may be problematic.  Worth a try.  I know you are home all the time and can provide the necessary supervision.  My goldendoodle did kill a very friendly neighborhood cat who had been left by his owners when they moved away.  The cat just wanted to be friends, but the dogs would have nothing of that.  Cats, squirrels, lizards - my dogs love a good chase.
