Our rescue group received a mother (Maltese-Mix) and a litter of four puppies from a woman who said that she rescued them from an abusive home. She told us that she wanted the mother but would surrender the puppies to us and we could have the mom as long as the puppies needed her.
The mom (Molly) is a wonderful girl and was a wonderful mother to her litter of puppies. However she had some symptoms that really worried us. She would cock her head to the right and often spin in circles. She seemed to have problems walking in a straight line...
We asked the woman about this and she said that she had brought Molly to the vet and there was no problem that the vet could ascertain. We then began thinking neurological concerns.
Anyway, we had a big battle with this person because we wanted Molly spayed before we returned the dog to her and she didn't believe in spaying and said that she would sue us if we did. That didn't worry me a bit because there is no judge or jury who would fault us for spaying this dog.
Anyhow, I finally talked this kook (she was telling me about the ghost of her dead dog who appears to her and tells her that it is wrong to spay a dog) into turning Molly over to our organization for placement. I alluded to the fact that Molly might have serious neurological problems and that we have vets used to working with those problems. I also told her what the vets charged. Anyway, she surrendered Molly over to us yesterday and we had her spayed this morning. We asked the vet to look into her ear to rule out anything like a fox-tail before we did a neurological workup, despite the previous vet not finding anything.
The vet found that Molly had ear mites and we have put her on medication. She is sleeping right now, exhausted from the surgery and probably relieved for the first application of ear mite medications.
I found out that the kooky gal had never brought Molly to a vet. Her veracity regarding the vet was about the same as her veracity about her old dog's ghost reappearing in crystalized form to talk to her about spaying. Instead of taking her to the vet, she had put some homeopathic ear drops in Molly's ears!
Anyway, ear mites are a darn site better than a brain or nerve problem. BTW, we had the pups checked and they are free of the mites.
Molly will be going to the wonderful furever home she deserves sometime in the future!
