I've had a fly in my bedroom for three nights now.  (No, I don't live in filth, I swear.)

I think flies move a bit slower in winter?  Its zooming had been easier to ignore than usual.  So, for two nights I halfheartedly swatted at it with a book and then let it go. Porter also made a couple pathetic attempts to eat it in midair, but he was also uncommitted.

Well, tonight I decided enough was enough, and Porter realized this.

I got out of bed and started tracking it.  He got out of his fetal-dog position and started snapping at it and showing me with his gaze where it had flown. For all that dogs have bad vision, mine is apparently worse.

Porter made first contact.  He caught the fly in his mouth, but dropped it right away.

I moved in with a book smoosh, on my soft comforter.  Ineffective but showed Porter I meant business.

As the fly was crawling away, Porter managed to grab it again.  He chewed a couple times and spat it out again, and again, and again.  Until when he spat, nothing came out.  He was noticeably disappointed that the mission was over.

But I cheered him up with a "Good doggie, yeah!"  He's earning his keep.  I have a working dog.

JD is too dignified to eat bugs.  I mean he is a Wizard, and the leader of the Fellowship of the Rings and all!

Where was Porter when we had our fly infestation last summer? JD was useless. Good boy, Porter!

Glad you liked the story.  I would have loved to get a video of it, too.

Linda, yummy cicados :-)  Growing up in VA, I am very familiar.  My "childhood" cat of 21 yrs was such a hunter and he would catch and eat cicados, among other things.  (He also played fetch with the orange connector piece of Tinker Toys.)

The only thing that would have made this any funnier would have been a video of the whole scene. Had me chuckling.

I am in a bad, bad mood today and this lightened it up a bit. It was such a fun post.

This was the funniest post I have read in months!  Porter, you are the bomb!

In NC we have cicada.  Seda chased one and unceremoniously chewed it up.  See below.

Hey Porter,  now that I know how much you enjoy it, I'll be glad to send you the bugs from my house to chase!!

Great job Porter.  Will you to our house and show Harlow how to hunt bugs?

Porter graciously thanks you all for your praise.

He understands that all doodles would like to be as talented as him, but such greatness is hard to achieve.  He will be hosting a fly-catching seminar in January for those who might be interested in earning the hunting badge for Doodle Scouts.
