I am disappointed that I was not able to pick up Shelby today. I had my whole Birthday planned out to spend the day with my new puppy, and now I am sitting on the couch watching TV.

I started out this morning taking the kids to Bob Evans and then we headed out to pick up Shelby. That is when the breeder called me and let me know that when she was bathing Shelby for me to pick her up she noticed that one of her lymph nodes was swollen.

The breeder said she was going to start her on antibiotics and take her to the vet on Monday to see if it could be Juvenile cellulitis or "puppy strangles". I never heard of that so I came home and looked it up and it seems like it could be serious. I am really worried. I obviously know that it was great the breeder did not let me take her and I respect that, but still a disappointing day.

Just thought I would let all of you know why there was no pictures of Shelby yet.

Anyone have problems with a bad odor for a puppy with puppy strangles?  I know this is an old thread, but something we were not familiar with until one of our precious pups was dx with it just before his 6 week vaccinations.  Vet has increased his steroids and he is now playing more and eating much better.  But I have to say, the odor from the sores oozing has been horrible.  I feel so sorry for him when he was at his worse, as he is such a gorgeous puppy and you hate to see any living thing go through this horrible virus.  We have tried baths, but it hurts, so have tried to not mess with him too much, to keep him more comfortable.  Anyone have the same problem?  If so, when did you notice the odor clearing up?  Thanks & blessings, Kim

Oh, I did not blame her at all. In fact I respect her honesty. She easily could have sent home a sick puppy with me and I would have not known until I took her to the vet for her shots. It all worked out and I ended up with the most perfect little puppy. Things happen for a reason!

Strangles was something that happened in horses but they are finding it in puppies now.. no one seems to know why it happens but if treated right away you will have a happy health puppy soon.. some claim it is a reaction from vaccines but it has been found in puppies who have not had any vaccines yet and as young as 3 weeks. Kind of like strep but is not contagious.. one puppy out of litter can have it and it does seem to have any rhyme or reason to it.. It is treated with a combo of steroids and antibiotics for several weeks and you must watch your puppy after the meds are done for any signs of returning illness. however this is rare.. so is strangles for that matter... but it has been on the increase in the past few years... Some vets will not give any vaccines until you are done with the meds so you will have to be extra careful where you take her for a time. I wouldn't blame the breeder.. It only seems to happen to puppies less than 5 months old.

Awww. The waiting is so hard. But it's better that she gets checked out, so that she can be completely healthy when she comes to her new home.

I had a similar experience on the day I was to receive Capp. He could not be cleared by the vet and receive a health certificate, and I had to wait for another week to get him. The vet had to put him on meds. He had picked up a parasite! He was the only one that was due to ship out that could not do so! I feel your disappointment. I hope your puppy will be fine and will be able to come home soon!
