What?? I am going crazy with this puppy. When I leave, he gets soooo bored, I guess! He finally got to my calendar that I put so HIGH up that he could not reach it, but he did and shredding it to bits!! I guess he didn't like 2009! Then, he ate a whole slab of brownies that were in a tupperware all the way back on the counter.

Now, I'm hoping he doesn't get sick. But he has been running around the house like a nut!!! He NEVER does it for more than 5 mins. but, he is acting weird & I'm thinking it's the brownies! Acting nervous too. Hmmmmm.

Ugh, it never ends. What will I find tomorrow????

How's Samson today?
Comment by Ann on December 7, 2009 at 8:27pm
Samson is fine, thank God! He did the crazee behavior for about 3 hours. I kept taking him out to burn off some energy for him. He did not have any stomach distress, just running around, throwing his toys around and jumping up on me. He finally settled down around 6-6:30 pm tonight and has slept. He is fine. My last dog, a lab, ate a whole tray of brownies too and was fine. I know some dogs that are smaller have problems but I googled it too and he would have had to have eaten a LOT more to have problems physically, other than the crazies! Thanks! I'm upset at myself for leaving it on the counter! I really had no idea he could reach it or he would get it open! I have to rethink my whole kitchen counter area tomorrow. Oy-vey!

I would definitely consider contacting your vet about the brownies. It really does sound like they could have a lot to do with his behavior and you want to make sure your little monster is ok. Other than that, he's just a puppy. Maybe start some training sessions at home if he's too young to go to classes. It should help wear him out and give you commands to teach him what he can and cannot do. :)

Ahh, the memories =) I was going to say I remembered when our beagles were younger and I would catch them on the counter. Then I found our 9 year old fat boy on the counter today!

Years ago I had a Lab who was huge and also was a MAJOR counter surfer. I ended up having to totally clear my kitchen counters of everything except the basic appliances. There was nothing on the refrigerator or anywhere else in the kitchen. That's where he stayed while we were at work, and the only way it worked was to be sure there was absolutely nothing he could possibly eat. We left him his food, water, and heavy duty (indestructible) chew toys whenever we were not around. When I was cooking I had to gate him out of the kitchen because if I turned my back even for a minute he would get to the food. He lived to be 15 years old, and this never changed. I tried every training "trick" in the book. Other than that he was an amazingly loving and well trained dog. People used to comment about how laid back and well behaved he was...of course they never saw him when there was a roast on the table for dinner. I wish you luck, but this may be one of those things that will be very difficult to change without stripping down the kitchen.

I am concerned that the craziness could be the brownies. chocolate is a central nervous system stimulant for dogs. I'd call the vet or Ask a vet.com for advice.
What makes chocolate toxic, anyway?
Chocolate is made from the fruit (beans) of the cacao tree. Theobromine, a component of chocolate, is the toxic compound in chocolate. (Caffeine is also present in chocolate, but in much smaller amounts than Theobromine.) Both Theobromine and Caffeine are members of a drug class called Methylxanines.

Theobromine and caffeine effects on the body:

* Central Nervous System (CNS) stimulant
* Cardiovascular stimulant
* Increase blood pressure (mild)
* Nausea and vomiting

Are some chocolates more toxic than others?
Yes. Unsweetened (baker's) chocolate contains 8-10 times the amount of Theobromine as milk chocolate. Semi-sweet chocolate falls roughly in between the two for Theobromine content. White chocolate contains Theobromine, but in such small amounts that Theobromine poisoning is unlikely. Caffeine is present in chocolate, but less than Theobromine.
