Tonight Jesse had his Passover in Mayo. Jess read from the Haggadah for me and his son Matt. Regina hooked me up with some items for the seder plate. I brought in a little cooler and other items in my teacher cart. Passover on wheels. I may be starting something.
As Jesse read I couldn’t help but stare at his face the entire time, thinking of what a miracle it is for him to be alive, and how much it meant to him to have some sort of Passover, even if it was more symbolic than anything else. He looked up from the Haggadah and said, “Thank you for indulging me,”
This time next year, I will make sure our table is filled with plenty of family and friends.
I went to work today before heading up to Mayo. I spoke to Jess in the morning and his voice sounded strong. By about 10 his voice was sounding horse again. I am wondering if it is his heart or that his vocal chords are still healing?
He has no shortness of breath, just overall weakness. He knows movement is important and it is still such a great effort for him. His attitude is terrific; he makes a point to smile for me. He knows I worry, and I know he feels his days are tedious and that his recovery takes so long. We try to hold on to the goal of being together when he is well.
I took all the cards I have received and read them to him. Jess is so touched by the lovely thoughts and compassion from all our friends, family, and community. Thanks to everyone – so very much.
Tomorrow we do this again. Jess never knows how much energy he’ll have. He gets apprehensive but he perseveres. God bless this man.
