This seems like a good idea. However, I would not want this done to any of my rescue dogs until we have a body of evidence that it is safe and effective...
Our vet is an excellent surgeon and will neuter our males without seeming to inflict any pain. We just had two young males neutered and the were playing on the evening of their surgery.
I had a new type of artificial knee joint installed soon after it was approved by the FDA... It was terrible and defective. I was in agony and I had to undergo a second surgery two months later to relieve the pain and install a the old and proven type of knee joint. Although I gained a $50,000 settlement; I would much rather not have gone through that agony.
If a computer program has faults, no big problem... If a set of tires are recalled, no big problem either... However if something is done to our body or our dog's bodies incorrectly, that can be a tragedy!

This is interesting but needs more investigation. I'm off topic a bit but I had an interesting discussion on genetic inherited diseases in dogs with one of the Veterinary surgeons in the University where Boris had his surgery. He said that it won't be too long before the Genotyping of dogs will be able to take place and will be a much easier and cheaper way of finding markers to genetic illnesses across the breeds. He said, for example that hip dysplasia is scored at the moment and is a pretty blunt instrument compared to genetic profiling which will give cheaper, quicker, accurate results. Doing away with very expensive testing that lots of breeders fail to do and offering the possibility to eradicate some of those awful diseases. He also mentioned that he had gone to Crufts dog show in the UK as he happened to be in the area and was horrified by what he saw as the 'breed standard' in lots of the dogs.
This is interesting. I agree with you and F. I wouldn't want my guys to 'be the first on their block to..." I also wonder if it inhibits those intact male behaviors we don't like, especially the one where they try to get out to search for an in heat female they smell.....
That was very interesting Richard. But I'm with you in that I wouldn't want my dogs to be the guinea pigs. I never prescribe medications until they have been on the market for a while and a very large sampling of patients have tried them. I also wonder if this type of neutering just stops sperm production and is it still possible for a dog to get testicular cancer. I will have to read more about this.
