Well...your little dood is a genious!  I'll bet you are so proud of him!

L & S mom - Your Sophie sounds like Maggie!  She does the same thing.  Yesterday, on our hike we ran into a LOT of people wanting to know about our doods, and of course I can talk their ears off!  Sometimes I wonder if they regret asking!  LOL!  Anyway...Maggie gave them "the paw" we call it.  She doesn't want to shake hands...just to hold hands.  Very sweet.  Good idea about changing commands to suit their action!

looks like Cider is catching on to things really well.  Our Sophie is one of those dogs that as soon as she sits to be petted that paw comes up off the floor.   She doesn't just want you to shake it, she wants you to hold hands with her.  So, when we were training for therapy work she wasn't allowed to let that automatically come up off the floor or it would have been a fail.  So, I changed it up to "Hold Hands" instead of the shake thing.  So now, when we are doing therapy work and someone asks her to shake she just looks at them and I'll say "Sophie do you wanna hold hands" and then she will give them her paw!  The folks in the nursing homes get the biggest kick out of her holding their hand.  They think she is just wanting to shake, and they let go and she gives it right back to them.  Then I have to explain to them that she doesn't want to shake, she wants to hold hands.  They will sometimes yell down the hall to one of their friends, "look, she is holding my hand". It always makes them feel special.    Cider is adorable.  Keep the tricks coming, I'm enjoying watching him learn.
