Perhaps you have already seen this. I just received the latest Whole Dog Journal and there was an article about this book. It looks to be very interesting and I am off in search of it today. I have been trying to 'study' foods and unearth some information over the last couple weeks as we contemplate a potential food change - it is enough to scramble your brains : ) I cannot wait to get my hands on this book for yet another resource to make informed choices. Check out Dr. Pitcairns, "Complete Guide for Natural Health." Lots of good advice. Also, there have been several Forums on dog food right here at DK that were very informative. Go back into the archives to search. In May and June we had a big discussion on this subject.

Thanks Lynne for the book suggestion. I do recall the discussions of May & June and have also followed as well as participated in many on the breeder forums as well. There is a LOT of information out there, the challenging part is finding and interpretting. People are 'vulnerable' in regards to their pets and there certainly an abundance of corporations out there ready, willing and able to take advantage of that. We have been doing much research and the more tools in the toolbelt the better!

Hi Dianne,
This book sounds great and sounds like something you will enjoy. Do you feed your dogs dry currently?

We originally yrs ago fed dry, then homecooked, the had a woman cook for us, then lazy and was part dry/homecooked and then raw. LOL

Yes Michele we do feed dry and mix a very small amount of canned on occasion for a treat. The exception is when I have pregnant or nursing mothers, I cook 'gourmet meals' for them to combine with their diet of dry. We have experimented with several brands and were with Canidae for the entire year up to the formula changes. We have not really had an issue with the formula, I do however have issues with how it was implemented as well as some 'political' stuff about it. At the moment our dogs are absolutely loving Evangers and Orijen. Regardless of whether we are satisfied or not, we are always collecting information.

Marion Nestle is a well respected PhD in human nutrition who has written a couple EXCELLENT books for people on food politics and health eating (not really "diet" books) -- I like her a lot. I'm sure this book is also excellent.

Another text on canine nutrition, by the National Academies of Science, I think about buying now and then (but never have plunged in and bought cuz it's not cheap) is found here: Nutrient Requirements of Dogs and Cats. Parts of the book:

Hi Adina!
I am certain you are also very familiar with the book to be released next year with Drs. Nestle and Nesheim, 'What Pets Eat' - this looks to be excellent as well. I have just reserved a copy to pick up at Borders this afternoon, I could pick it up for less online but Florida is in for a bunch of rain and I could not think of a better way to spend the afternoon. So I will snuggle myself amongst the doodles and dig in!

Just checked out the book you referenced. As you said it looks incredible, but yes hefty expenditure. Not that it is not worth it, I will keep my eye on it and give it some consideration.
