Help! My almost 6 month old GD was neutered yesterday. He has been in a constant state of unrest ever since. He wants to get at the site so badly, it's like he's obsessed. He has an E-collar on, but I think he is itching really badly, because he'll lie down, then jump up, and run in circle, then lie down, try to get at himself to bite or lick, & whimper. He (and I) totally did not sleep at all last night. The vet gave us a pain medication for every 12 hours, but it's not doing anything. And now it's Labor Day weekend & my only option is the pet ER, so I bought some hydrocortisone/aloe vera cream for dogs to put on his tummy & the surrounding area, but he's practically jumping out of his skin if I try to touch it. Has anyone been down this road? I am so worried.

I am sorry he is not feeling better. Neither Boomer nor Mariner had any of these problems. As a matter of fact we did not even use the E-collar. I do not think that it is normal for him to be in this much discomfort. I would call the pet ER, although it may not be anything, it should be checked.

Please let us know.
That is not normal. You should take your dog to the emergency room ASAP. Both my boys are neutered and they didn't have any problems. Let us know how is he feeling
How does the area appear to you? Does it look to have the beginning indications of an infection? And how about his appetite and fluid intake, are they normal? We had 4 boys neutered 2 weeks ago, 3 did fabulously while one seemed to be a bit more 'uncomfortable', we did not have any pain meds. I did call our vet one day because the area was blotchy red but upon talking we determined that situation did not warrant a trip, it was an irritation rather than an infection. I think just like people some dogs have a different pain threshold. I would never imply this substitutes for vet care, but something to think about. I think the main complication following this surgery is infection or premature removal of stitches (with a little canine help if you know what I mean). Our largest obstacle has been in trying to keep them lying a bit low. Best of luck and do keep us posted on the results.

His fluid intake is good. He just finally ate a somewhat normal meal. He's only urinated twice in the last 22 hours, once yesterday when he got home from the vet & once this morning, which is totally not normal. The incision site looks ok, it does not look inflamed, and isn't oozing or anything. I think the hydrocortisone/aloe vera did seem to help, because he actually slept about an hour, maybe a little longer, since I put it on. I've been suspecting that he has really sensitive skin ever since I read the discussions here about dermatitis, but I just can't be sure that's what this is. Although, he certainly is acting like he has an intense itch he can't scratch! Thank you for comments. I'll keep all of you posted.
By the way, I did call the PET ER, and the vet is operating some little guy right now, so it'll be awhile before he can even take a look a Kachi, and even then, the nurse said the vet will take any animals more critical than Kachi, first. I felt like I could try to keep Kachi calm, and more comfortable here, & see if he takes a turn for the better over the next few hours.
If he has sensitive skin then the combination of the shaving and the incision site is probably over the top for him in trying to maintain comfort. You may want to try giving him some low sodium chicken broth, it has enough salty flavor that he will want more water and will HAVE to urinate more. Get through this one first then you can start taking a look at the skin issue. BTW what does he eat for food and treats? Many skin issues can be managed very well with diet.

Well, the good news is he just slept for a couple of hours, the bad news is he still wouldn't urinate when he woke up!

But to answer your question, we feed him Innova. He has a lttle cottage cheese/or plain yogurt in it in the mornings. In the evenings, we mix it with a little Iams gravy & low sodium green beans or frozen peas. For a snack, he has a Nutro Ultra biscuit, or a little peanut butter, cheese, carrot. And he loves to chew Booda bones, but he only gets those once and awhile.

I am going to try the low sodium broth this evening. Thank you!
I'm so sorry he's having a rough time...after all your worrying yesterday about the whole thing. Let us know how he's doing and what you decided to do!
Liza, I hope Kachi is feeling more like himself by now. My Murphy did really well and was back to his old self within a few days. I think we had to leave the collar on for 3 days.
Liza, how is Kachi doing today?
Thank you for asking! Kachi is doing so much better!! The hydrocortisone/aloe vera cream is really helping him. The incision still looks real good, and I am very careful not to get the cream on it. He is like a different dog, thankfully! This morning he actually rolled over on his back and gladly let me rub some cream on him, where as yesterday, I could barely touch him without him coming unglued! And I can tell he's feeling better because he keeps ringing his bell to go outside where he heads straight for the swimming pool! He looks at me like, "What do you mean I can't go in??" Now, if I could only devise some waterproof swim trunks for dogs, I'd be all set!!
Hi we had willson neutered on Thursday he seemed great Friday, but last night he was trying to lick his area even with the E-collar on but I really think it is the cone that is irrating it, he even tries to get to the area while standing up, I am calling the vet this morning in fact in five minutes, I am so glad I searched this and will try the hydrocortisone cream, his incision is pink but looks like a few stitches are missing
