Can someone please tell me the difference between the Les Poochs Green and Purple brushes? I know green is supposed to be Medium and purple is supposed to be Firm. What does that mean? Is the firm going to be rougher on the skin? How do you decide what brush is right for you if you don't have access to them to try them out first? On the Les Pooch site it says Green is for poodles and Purple is for golden retrievers....When you have a goldendoodle...which do you choose?
I have wavy fleece coats and a rare wool coat in most of my dogs and I prefer the double purple. I even have the red emergency mat zapper and prefer my purple over the red.
I have poked myself with them and they hurt if not used properly but they are easy to use, very quick and efficient.
I have a wool coated labradoodle and I got the green one, it works great. I think any of them can be rough on the skin if you are not careful. I have had friends tell me that their dogs have come back from the groomer with scratches and raw spots on their skin from a groomer being overly aggressive with a les poochs brush.
If you e-mail Kemp Rader at the Doodle Country Store (kemp@doodlecountry.com) and tell him a little about the type of coat your dog has, and send him a few pictures, he will tell you which brush(es) would be best for you. I think that would be much easier than trying to guess for yourself and potentially picking the wrong expensive brush.
I just e-mailed Kemp at Doodle Country Store who is a member of DK. I included pictures of Gracie so he could see the hair. I was using a purple brush which was way too stiff for Gracie's soft hair and her skin. Here is his reply. You can contact him and he will help you decide.
Thank you for asking about a Les Poochs brush for Gracie, and thank you for providing the photos.
When comparing the Yellow and Green brushes here are a few important things to consider:
• The Yellow brush is softer than the Green brush, however it has dematting bristles on only one side of the brush head….the opposite side is equipped with straight-inclined bristles for finishing. The straight bristles are not very effective to use on a doodle’s coat.
• The Yellow brush is great to use for a puppy’s very fine coat, but it is a delicate brush and it would wear out quickly if used frequently to brush an adult-size goldendoodle.
• The Green brush is slightly firmer than the Yellow brush, but it is softer than the Purple brush you currently have. The bristles on the Green brush are basically the same as the Purple brush, but the brush head is much more flexible. The flexibility would provide more comfort for Gracie.
• The Green brush is equipped with dematting bristles on both sides of the brush head, similar to the Purple brush.
Personally, my favorite variety is the Green brush. The Green brush is by far the most popular variety among doodle owners and it is used by many professional groomers. The Doodle Country Store is currently sold out of the Regular Sized Green brush. However, if you would like to order this brush, you can place your order at any time and it will ship as soon as we receive our supply estimated to arrive between Feb 8th and 12th.......The Wide sized Green brush is now in stock, as well as the Yellow brush (both sizes).
Thank you so much for your question Nancie. Please feel free to contact me any time at kemp@doodlecountry.com

Yes, the yellow brush is a lot finer and softer and will wear out. I still like it for my wool doodles as they have fine soft coats. The straight side does a good job on their tummies. The other brushes do not have tynes close enough together to work on those coats. My fleece coats can handle the purple brush...I lost my green one or it walked away and I really miss it.
Just keep the brush flat to the skin and you will have no problems. I can brush my hand without scratching it if the brush is flat. You don't need to put any pressure on the brush...let the brush do the work. It won't go faster if you brush harder. You will just upset your dog.
I got green for my Fleece mini Golden Doodle. (Kemp's recommendation) I love the brush and I don't think I would want anything stiffer, because I've hit my hand with it and it hurts, so imagine what it's doing to their skin if you use it incorrectly. She doesn't like me to use it on her legs at all, so I am extra careful because this sensitive area must hurt.
I have been planning to order the green brush for Chewie, but reading this thread has me a little concerned with the references to using it incorrectly and hurting the skin. I know very little about grooming and would not know what is correct vs. incorrect usage. Does it come with instructiions?
I use the green brush for Guinness. It does a great job, and it has never scratched him. It was recommended by Kemp after I gave him the details on Guinness's coat.
We have used the green small LesPouchs for Ned until now. His coat is pretty long and the green brush was just not doing the job so Kemp suggested that we try the purple on Ned while we have his coat long and switch back to the green when we decide to cut him shorter. I love the bent tines and that both sides have those. The straight slicker brushes do nothing for my doodle's coat.
My husband holds Ned while I brush him and I have brushed his hand - he does say ow, so I guess when they hit skin, it hurts! tee hee. However, he has no scratches....
We use the purple - I love it. Oh Peri is an F1 mini. I don't know how to describe her hair. But she doesn't shed. Here are two photos - 1 before grooming last week, the other is her current, shorter 'do:
