I never seem to get a straight answer, if any, to this question. If checking lineage is not an option, are there any anatomical differences that make it a definite one or the other?

I've attached three pics. Can you tell me which is which?

Don't cheat! ;-)

The breed standard is undocked.
None of those dogs has a docked tail.
So which one is the PWD??????
Here you go.
Here are the answers to the PWD OR Doodle dog pics.
No. 1 PWD
No. 2 Spanish Water Dog ( I had to sneak him in :-] )
No. 3 Doodle

No. 4 Doodle
No. 5 PWD
No. 6 Doodle
Nora, I would try to find more reliable photographic examples of PWDs if you really want to study their charcteristics. The "Natural Pet Care Products" website is a not a reliable source for a photo of a PWD. I strongly question that number 5 is a Portie.

At any rate, does it matter much what he is? I'm sure he's adorable; just love him, and tell yourself he's whatever you want him to be!
Not so easy to tell, huh? The last three I'm adding are as follows:
Brown and White PWD
Black and White Doodle
Grey -PWD

If they all have the same type of coat and a retriever clip, it''s very hard to tell. Some of the answers I got are way off. I've been doing a lot of research on both breeds. It seems that some of the doodler's and H2O owners are so critical of each other's breeds.
I want to make sure my guy remains healthy. Most breeds have glitches particular to them.

By the way, I've always picked a dog when our eyes met and we both felt each other's spirit.

According to PWD standards, a good PWD would have a deeper chest and shorter legs for the size than a doodle. Since there are no doodle standards except for an ALD, doodles vary quite a lot. The noticeable thing, although you would have to get up close and personal, is that PWD have black lips, and mucose membranes, under tongue area etc. I have never met a doodle with this trait. PWD's are not to have their tails docked as it is an aid in swimming. As someone else mentioned, PWD are supposed to have heads that when looked at straight on are "blocky" or longer side to side than top to bottom.
My friend has 2 PWD.(She has been training both for years.) Both are solid black, One has a soft wavy coat and the other is a coarse, tight curly coat. One is 55lbs and one is 45 lbs. She does agility with them and they both have "issues". One is terminally shy/fearful and the other is dog aggressive (I refuse to have Murphy around him anymore) and has been banned from agility competition.
I much prefer my big, goofy terminally happy goldendoodle!
We play with a couple of PWDs at the park. They seem to be longer in the body and lighter boned than #1. Who can tell w/ #2. Pic #3 comes closest to the pair we know though a different color.
My friend's two Porties:

They could fool me.
Compared to ALDs or mini doodles, there is a resemblance. But not compared to an 85# standard; the facial features are smaller, especially the noses, and the muzzles are shorter. PWDs ears are set much higher than doodles, too.
