Do you have a favorite character in a story you have read or even a movie. My first dog I named Houdini because my husband is a magician. The next pup my son wanted to name. he picked Achilles. He read a lot of mythology. At first I didn't like it but now I love it.
First of all congratualtions on your new puppy. The wait is so exciting! Tori is part aussie so we wanted to go with some type of australian or Abourigone ~ thus the name "Tori" it means elegant... We also liked "Cobber" which means "friend", but we thought that sounded 'boy-ish'. But if our next dog is a male... we have his name all picked out. We still like that name, so who knows male or female next - we just may use it any way...My Golden retriever we had years ago went about a week with no name, b/c just the 2 of us could not agree. Finally we named him "Swayze" after Patrick Swayze. I used to teach dance, and one day we were watching a recital tape that I dragged my husband into participating in and we teased him calling hime Patrick Swayze... thus the name... Swayze ~ LOL
Good luck choosing a name. I always think names of people AND pets should have a special meaning to you.
Gavin was named after Denis Leary's character on our favorite TV show - "Tommy Gavin" on "Rescue Me." I saw an episode of the Dog Whisperer where he was working with the greatest yellow lab who was a bomb sniffing vet from the Iraq war. He was a very, very special dog. His name was Gavin too, so that cemented it for me.

I originally had a black coated girl picked out. Just from the picture I had her named Fergie, because I though she looked "Fergilicious" as the song goes.
Our doodle is called Ollie as we got him during the Beijing Olympics.
The kids and I are very keen on getting another but my husband is being the sensible voice at the moment........ There was a litter born at our breeders about a month ago which I was looking at daily and we were planning on using the name Couver (to keep with the Olympic theme.........) I think we're getting closer with my husband as we were talking about going away the other day and he said well what about Couver in all of this...... think if hes using the name thats a good sign!!!!!!
Good Luck with name search........
Go, Sam,Go! Sounds like you've just successfully completed a "Triple Lutz". Go get Couver! By the way ~ I JUST LOVE that name! My husband is the same way.. sensible, but I do believe he's softening too!
When we were getting a pup we didn't know if it was a boy or girl. I have to confess that I had a boy name picked at least 2 years before we got our boy Quincy( for those of you old enough to remember Quincy ME from tv). A girl name was a little harder. It came down to a toss up between JoJo, Josie and Susie Q. There may still be a girl doodle in my future I hope. Good luck with your baby and remember you are going to be using it a lot, so practice saying it and settle on what feels right. A friend call her dog Ovechekin after the hockey plalyer.(doesn't exactly roll off the tongue does it?). No too sure of the spelling for Ovechekin but you get the idea.
Congratulations!! My puppies were named by my boyfriend...who is now my husband! He really didn't want any dogs but he broke down and said I could get a puppy. I told him he could name our first doodle...he picked Sheba. I like the name but I probably would have chosen differently. Later Duke came along (Couldn't believe he said yes to another dog!)
and again I said he could name this puppy. The breeder had actually named him Princeton and named his brother Duke. My hubby decided to go with the name Duke. We weren't very creative when we named our new pups! They do however have many nicknames that I use instead of their given name! :)
Gavin's mom, a standard poodle is named Sheba.
I picked Peri because husband and I wanted our first dog together to be named after our school mascot, Peruna the Pony. So it would be Peri for a boy or Lady Peri for a girl! That's what we did.
It's such a personal thing...pick something that you like and run with it!
Most training books suggest two syllables and using hard syllables at beginning or end (can't remember which is better). But more importantly, I'd suggest that you consider the meaning or association any names will have to other people as well. For example, in one episode of the Dog Whisperer, he was working with a dog that had been named "Cujo". This name had such a strong negative association for most people, that it affected the way people approached and interacted with the dog. It caused most people to respond in a tense, fearful, and nervous energy. In this case, they changed the name by shortening it to "Jo" instead. So just remember that the names we choose will affect how others perceive our dogs, what our dogs will be associated with, and will often be the first impression others will get of our dogs as well.
Amen - that certainly is true! I remember the Cujo episode.
DH and I already decided on Nala or Simba for our next dog. Lion King is about the best disney movie ever - what a good first impression that would give people!
We tried to think of people we admire or had made an impact on our lives. We really wanted a scientist's name. We were considering Darwin, Kepler, Pasteur, Freud, Newton, Einstein, Galileo, etc. When we went to pick up Darwin, we knew what name was right. He just looked it! We are considering getting a second dog now, and I have a feeling Newton will be the name we pick...
