All three of our guys were matted and had to be shaved down (yesterday). Mariner wasn't himself all day, he was lethargic, not eating well, shivering, not drinking and sleeping most of the day. We called our vet (at home) about an hour ago. He thinks that Mariner is a little shocky and his blood sugar may be low. It also is not helping that it got cool out. He said to keep him warm and to give him a little ice cream to bring his sugar up. Also to repeat the ice cream later - just a small amount so not to give him a jolt. He also said to call him anytime tonight if Mariner gets worse. And if he is not better to bring him in at 8:30 am. His shivering seems to have abated somewhat but I just stopped him from chomping on his dew claw.
Mariner is perking up, the ice cream and warm blankets seem to be helping. Spoke to vet this morning - Mariner had been shaking his head - vet thinks may have gotten water in his ears. We started Otomax in his ears. It may take a couple of days until he is back to himself.
Poor Mariner. We used to get our Clay shaved down every summer and he was like a puppy afterwards. He never had a reaction like that. Sophie and I send get well wishes!!
It seems mariner doesn't get a break. Maybe it's time for home grooming. I can't say my guys love it but I think it's much less stressful for them than it would be elsewhere. And you save money ; )
We do home grooming too with a great pair of WAHL clippers, that came with an instruction DVD, bought on ebay. OSTER is another good brand.
My hubby is becoming an expert and fast too. We save so much money and Jasper is comfy getting this done by his 'parents' rather then some stranger.
We also have a clawlike dematting comb, which is fantastic to get the stubborn ones out. Use a leave in conditioner with ALOE VERA and OATMEAL . Great for the skin conditioning too!
