I love Molly, she is 9 months and she is the most cuddly thing ever. we got her for my daughters 6th birthday! BUT, I have never ever seen a dog shed as much as her. It is so extreme. We have all wood and tile floors except in the bedrooms. No exaggeration ... we vacuum every single night. We look like dirty people that have not cleaned their floor in months. Since it is wood floors it just floats around. We have a Dyson vacuum and it is wonderful at sucking up the hair. By the time we finish each night, we literally have to dump it. We are praying that this is a stage.
Has she always shed or did it just start recently? Unfortunately, it is highly likely she is just a shedder like a lot of F1 doodles are (is she an F1 goldendoodle)? Sorry...wish there was a magic way to stop shedding =)
I was also wondering if she just started shedding, or if she always has. If she just started, it could be that she is starting the coat change to her adult coat. Brushing her regularly should help!
For the floating loose fur on the hardwood floor, the swiffer works great!! It corrects all of the loose fur!! It's not a doodle thing, but I have a cream color Chow Chow, and he sheds soooo much, too!
Hi Julie, My F1 goldendoodle, TImbow, does shed some now and he's almost 1 1/2 years old. However, around 8-10 months he was a shedding maniac. We lived with lint brushes in our hands and swept our wood floors everyday. My guess would be that Molly is transitioning into her adult coat. I would also brush her daily or every other day and see if that helps.
Hi! Don't despair yet! Just wait it out and keep telling yourself that this too shall pass. and... hopefully it will. If she has a flat retriever type coat, it will always shed, but she probably is going through her coat change and you will soon be complaining of matts. I have an F1 that is 2 1/2 and an F1b that is 1 1/2. I remember worrying that my F1 would always shed. But about 10 or 11 months we really started to see the coat change. He now has the softest fleece coat. He did blow the puppy coat around that age. We started to see matting and shedding. My F1b's coat shed some as a puppy but that has stopped with her adult coat. Now that I live in the world of regular grooming and matting if you're not careful with the longer coat, I tell people that shedding does have some benefits, it's not all bad. You don't have the matting problems with a dog that sheds, generally. Although I know that you can have some of both. If you've seen the siblings or previous litters of your puppies parents, that should give you a good idea of what you can expect it terms of an adult coat. Good luck!
Have you heard of the furminator? It's supposed to be really good to decrease shedding. I haven't used it yet but am planning on getting it this week since Holly also has been shedding terribly! Hers started around 8 months, she's now almost a year and it hasn't gotten any better. We always find tumbleweeds rolling around our tile floors :). Hopefully its the adult coat coming in for both of us!
I used a Les Poochs brush and steel comb on Peri pretty much every day until the past month or so (she is now almost 13 months old). She has never shed that much, but when she was really going through the coat change, combing her daily drastically reduced the hairs floating around.
You will probably always have a shedder, but the amount will decrease as Molly gets older.
Hi Julie, Molly sounds a lot like my Hunter - she is an F1 Goldendoodle and is just a little over a year now. She started shedding around the 9 month mark like CRAZY and hasn't stopped since. I do find that if I brush her consistantly with a Furminator brush and bath her weekly in a moisturizing shampoo it really helps. If I am not brushing I am vacuming :-) My vet and groomer both said that it could decrease when she is between 1 1/2 and 2 years old. Hunter tends to shed puffs of fur along with long hairs. There is actually a group on DK that is for shedding doodles, you might want to check it out and see what all they suggest. Just my opionion and observation is that the doodles that matte more tend to be the non-shedders and the doodles that shed do not have much, if any, issue with matting. Hunter NEVER matte's anywhere which is really nice. Here is a picture of Hunter when she was about the same age - their coats look really similar in texture.......
