Wally Conron obviously hasn't been on Doodle Kisses or else perhaps he'd say "oh how cool that so many of these dogs turned out great!" He's taking way too much credit for the irresponsible folks out there. He really needs to give himself a break. He had a good initial idea...the immediate result didn't work for his needs, but he didn't exactly put in the time necessary to create a breed anyway -- which would have been required for him to get his consistently non-shedding dog that wasn't a poodle.
Puppy mills and irresponsible breeders will always try to make a profit off of what's popular and do it to the detriment of THAT breed. It happened with Dalmatians too...but I don't think Disney was horrible for making a really cool movie. Not all dogs that become famous are going to be shelter mutts.... There will be purposely bred dogs that end up on the news or in movies. The dogs in our shelters continue to be mostly pits, pit mixes, and farm dogs.
I am sorry that he is regretful about the craze he started, but let's face it, if it weren't for the "craze" none of us would have doodles.
I hate puppy mills and people that breed, with no regard for the health of parents or progeny. Like any breed, it takes responsible breeders to make healthy puppies.
I don't regret, for one minute, breeding Caeleach and Seamus. All puppies have wonderful homes, I have the proviso in my contract, that should any of the people need to rehome their dog, I will happily take the puppy back and find another good home.
Without that breeding, we would have never had CJ. She has the wonderful calm of her Poodle father, is intelligent like both parents and is the light of our lives.
I also dislike when I read 'histories' of the labradoodle that point it's origin as Australia. Wally created the idea...so the origin of the IDEA is Australia via Wally Conron...BUT MY labradoodle's origin is Montana where his poodle dad and Lab mom lived :-D
Yes, as soon as I opened AOL today I saw the labradoodle headline. Funny that this would be considered real news. But since I am a doodle addict that caught my attention over the attempted Time Square bombing. That being said, Mr. Conron didn't say anything that anybody with sense would know that puppy mills are bad and that people should buy from health certified breeders. Unfortunately I acquired by doodle 2nd hand and don't know her health background, but since I adopted her it is my responsibilty to love and take care of her through sickness and health. She is a member of my family!
