When we brought Maple home we were at a loss what to name her. She
looked like Chewbacca from Star Wars but that didn't pass the vote. We
surveyed friends and family and "Maple" fit, but I always remembered
that Chewbacca discussion and catching my husband late one night after
I went to bed, watching the Star Wars DVD to look at Chewbacca. So we
incorporated it into her "formal" or "show" name even though she does
not have papers. She is "Princess Maple Chewbacca of Ingleside". When
Lucky came along we had our reasons for naming her Lucky but also gave
her the formal name of "Duchess Lucky Stormtrooper of Calverton". Lucky
is white so the Stormtrooper thing fits. We live on Ingleside Drive in
the community of Calverton and Maple is the alpha dog so she's the princess. The weird thing
is that we are not Star Wars fanatics - it just happened!
Gavin was named after "Tommy Gavin," Denis Leary's character on our favorite TV show "Rescue Me." He has strawberry blonde hair, long legs and a skinny butt just like Denis!
I loved reading the reasons behind the names. I think names are so important for people or animals. They set the tone for how others see them.
My husband named our first small doodle. N.E.D. happens to be my initials (maiden name) so gee, I thought he was honoring me! Not! He chose Ned because he once had an" Irish kind of kid" student who was small, reddish-haired, peppy. Clancy, our rescue, arrived with the name Buck. I just couldn't picture calling to him in a dog park or when he jumped on someone, "Buck. Off!" So with lots of suggestions from dk members we ended up with Clancy, the name of Nancie and Graciedoodle Casey's human son. One of the suggestions was HulaDollar and Clancy was actually Hula for a day. I still kind of like that one.
I still love Huladollar, too, although it makes absolutely no sense to me and I have no idea what it means, lol! "Hula" would be a great name for a dog, though, and it fits my "ends in A or O" criteria.
I can't remember who, but a dk member said that she called her brother Hula Dollar for a while. She said her mom thinks it came from a store ad. I know they have Hula Days sometimes here in our grocery stores. You are allowed to name your next doodle Hula if you want to, but I am keeping it on my list too.
PS I love the name Jack and it is on my list too - for pets AND people.
I remember now. Thank you for being so generous with your dog names...I am very stingy with mine, lol.
I have a short list of names for future dogs, and they are top secret! Well, except for Hula, of course!
The story of Jack's name is a little boring. His name was Jake when I adopted him, but my grandson is Jake (Jacob) so that wouldn't work. He was confused enough with losing his home, so I wanted to stay with something that would sound similar. I'd fostered a GSD named Jacko not long before, who'd died of megaesophagus, so we decided to honor him by naming Jack after him.
The best dog name I ever had was my poodle's, Pawla. LOL. It was perfect! But she was bred for show, and her father was named Springsteen. So Pawla's real "formal" name was "Glory Days". I did consider calling her Glory for awhile.
I rarely name things based on any attachment to its meaning. For me it just has to 'sound' good to my ears and not be a name I've heard too much of. Rosco was supposed to be a girl so I had a looong list of names picked out for girls but also made a boy names list, just in case. I just kept crossing off names and crossing off names until I had very few left. I think I was down to Jackson, Charlie, Clifford and Rosco and...Rosco won! His formal name (which I didn't communicate to my breeder in time for him to have it on his registration, unfortunately) is Living Streams Robert Redfur ... it seemed fitting for a redhead from Montana (aaand Living Streams LD's was his breeder).
Clark named Thule (say too-lee) because it was close to her original previous name of "Truly" (she was a rehome) and he's Canadian and he likes skiing (Thule boxes). What's funny is that she was from Yakima and both Thule and Yakima are brands of ski boxes (or whatever those thingies are called that go atop of cars to carry luggage or skis).
I know I have told this story before, but we name all of our pets food names, except for our pure white rescue cat that we named Princess. I tried to change her name to Sugar, but my daughter (it is her cat) did not go for it. We have had two labs named Hershey and Honey and now we have our Fudge. We had a rabbit named Brownie...my husband voted for the name Stew as in Rabbit Stew, but he lost. When we got our male puppy in March, we had trouble coming up with his name. I wanted the name Noodle and my husband said no way was he going to the dog park and yelling, "here Noodle, here Fudge." We thought about Macaroni (calling him Mac), Butterscotch (Scotch or Butter), Cashew, Walnut (Wally), Mulligan (again as in Stew), and finally settled on Vernors and we call him Vern. Vernors fits the food thing, sorta, because it is a Ginger Ale that we grew up with in Indiana. My husband was happy. It was his pick and he has never picked before. We had to give in, because no matter what name I came up with, he would just say "Vern" over and over. It fits him too. Know what I mean, Vern :)
