I love mysteries. Authors I read include P D James, Reginald Hill, Martha Grimes and many more. I just saw that Lee Child had a new Jack Reacher out. Any favorites?

I love the classic Agatha Christie - she began my life-long favoritism for the mystery genre. I love Martha Grimes and most of the authors who base their stories in 18th and 19th century England. I also read Dick Francis, Tony Hillerman, Patricia Cornwell, Jeffrey Deaver, Patterson (both), Clark (both), JD Robb (aka Nora Roberts in another genre), Roosevelt, Margaret Truman, J.A. Jance. I could go on and on. I like Lee Child, and some of Stewart Woods, and Mott (great recipes too).
I loved Tony Hillerman. I gave up a while back on Patricia Cornwell, though. I'm not so big on the scary mysteries like Patterson. I always joke that I like one time murderers since I really am not fond of serial killer books.I have read some of almost all the authors you mention.
I am kind of tired of Cornwell also. She has gotten herself so tangled with those characters by having them evolve and then not knowing what to do with them but make them keep getting weirder and weirder. Why couldn't she just have continued with them where they were and solving murders! Lucy could grow up like she did, but all of the rest of the angst just gets in the way of the story - to me.
I am pretty much ok with blood and guts in books (not gross stuff) unless it involves kids or animals. J.A. Jance has a whole series with an old guy detective set in Seattle that I loved. She also has a newer series with a lady sheriff/police chief. She wrote one that involved child kidnapping that I hated and skipped the middle so that I could reassure myself that the child was ok.
I may have to look into Jance (although with my memory I may have read some of them:)The lady sheriff/police chief sounds familiar. I'm fine with blood and guts but I don't like certain kinds of twisted minds or too much suspense. I read one Stephen King years ago and that was enough.
Patricia Cornwell was my absolute favorite, but I agree, she created a mess with the characters.
Nancy you read my kind of books!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Nancy, I also started loving mysteries by reading Agatha Christie. I think I read every one of hers. I love Patterson and Clark, but I'm not familiar with Martha Grimes. I'll have to check her out.
I love to read Randy Wayne White's books. They are all set in Florida in the Keys or the Gulf Coast of Florida and he really makes you "see" the area. Makes me feel like I'm really there.
Oh, a new to me author, Joy. I am going to have so much fun when we get to our vacation spot. There is a great used book store.
F. I don't read Stephen King or any of the too suspenseful, scary, or evil witchcraft stuff. The J.A. Jance Seattle detective is J.P. Beaumont. I just remembered his name.
I love his books, along with Carl Hiaasen. I read Tim Dorsey just to stay in the area.
If you love mysteries, but aren't so big on getting scared, check out the author Alan Bradley. Just read The Sweetness At the Bottom of the Pie and it was a fun read. A British cozy-style mystery where the main character is a brilliant but incredibly mischievous & eccentric little girl. Engaging writing!
Sounds good.
