Astro is off his meds...and his stool has gone from normal to a total mess. I have never in my life smelled something so bad. It is olive green in color - mucousey. Developing a food allergy or Gall bladder or Pancrease? Any thoughts? I have to decide what tests to run next by 7am tomorrow.
Sounds like a plan. I will just make a big batched of poached chicken and white rice.....he will think he has died and gone to heaven. And our cat will be like what the heck is going on here? He had a restful night and the probiotics helped a bunch. His stool was more formed this morning. You would think with all the blood work and xrays and fecal testing we have done something would have been off if it where an organ problem.
How much chicken and rice do you feed an 85 pounder?SMILE
I'd start with about a quart container's worth twice a day. One time when I did this for a few days with Calla who weighed about 50 puonds I gave her about a pint twice a day. The way she gobbled it it seemed like nowhere near enough but she was fine in a few days.
I highly recommend cooking the rice in chicken broth (healthy and natural of course). Shelby ate around the rice until I figured this magical step out! Hope your dood gets better soon and that you get some answers!
Clancy, our rescue, had green mucousy stools for a while also. I have been trying to remember when and it might have been from the shots he had, the steroid shot or the antibiotic for a skin infection but most likely it was when we were changing his food. At one shelter he had been on ????; then at the other one Canidae with grain, then with us grainless EVO. We have only had him 4 1/2 months so food changes and medicines happened pretty close together. But the poo did change.
Different situation, but when Taquito was sick a few years ago, one certain vet kept putting him on different food, meds, etc....
I finally decided we needed a second opinion - my current vet told me to stop feeding all the different things and changing his diet so much. I fed him ONLY normal food, with some rice and chicken added in. Not sure that did the trick, but he finally turned a corner once I stopped with all the other crap.
Keep us posted!!!!!!!!! Peri wants to see her boyfriend soon.
Our old Golden Retriever used to suffer with colitis and most of the time we could control it by diet, if however she had a flare up after stealing human food or eating something nasty, the vet would prescribed Tylan for us to add to her food.
I found the results below
What is Tylan?
Tylan is an antibiotic used for colitis and chronic diarrhea. Tylan may also decrease the symptoms by affecting the immune system in the intestine.
Who is it for?
Tylan is for dogs and cats.
What are the benefits?
* Treats certain types of chronic diarrhea and colitis
* Also affects the intestine's immune system
* Powder form is easy to give with food
How does Tylan work?
Tylan is an antibiotic in the macrolide class that works by inhibiting protein synthesis in certain types of bacteria.
Is there a generic equivalent available?
No.
How is it given?
Tylan powder is given orally with food. Always follow the dosage instructions provided by your veterinarian.
This medication should only be given to the pet for whom it was prescribed.
What results can I expect?
Tylan will not cure the disease, but may help manage the symptoms. It may take a number of days to see an effect. May need to give for a number of weeks, depending upon the specific disease.
Well, I missed the boat before your 7 am deadline, but this sounds way too familiar. Hunter and Daisy were LIVING at the vets office...literally once a month I was bringing them in because of diarreah constantly. Let's start way back a year ago to the present day. First, they had coccidia...treated for that, they were fine. Second they got giardia....treated for that, they were fine. I had them on Blu for nearly 5 months. We had them first on the puppy and thought maybe the formula, so we changed them to the puppy for large breeds and that helped...for a month. Finally around January, Hunter had very noticable blood in his diarreah and we got him tested yet again and this batch helped the diagnosis of colitis. Believe it or not, what stool you happen to get to the vet will make a difference (the first squirt or 3 squirts later). Then, when Daisy had her episode a couple of days later, same thing. Well, we put them on homemade food and after a few months it was going great, then it started up again. That is when I decided to have a full CBC done on both of them. That is when we found out they both had Exocrine Pancreatic Insufficiency. Their test results were almost identical, guess because they are litermates :-) They are on Pancrezyme and a multi vitamin called Catalyn and they are on a homemade diet of raw beef, rice, carrots, and peas. This was the fornula for my dogs specific case and we had to tweek this one several times...they need more rice than normal because of the enzyme count in their liver and kidneys. All in all, their digestive systems have been 110% better. We were almost to the point of getting them to MSU for testing because our vet was even getting stumped even with the help of collegues from other offices. So....not sure if this may be a similar case with Astro, but the mucous...it can be the sign of several things, ours happened to be colitis.
Wow. Very helpful information...and odd we are eating Blu for almost the same time period. Pancreatic Insufficiency is one thing our vet is considering but would like us to try a new diet. Thank you so very much. Astro is resting at home...didn't take him for 7am pokeing and prodding. Smile.
Yvonne - I wanted you to update us all on what your vet recommends here. I think it really helps everyone, because lots of our doods get these stomach/poo issues.
You might also want to start a discussion in the food group - we can all try to figure out what might work best for Astrodood (you know we will try to find a good alternative to the suggested Royal Canin).
On our daily walk during lunch, Peri gave me a big smile and if she could talk she would have said "tell Yvonne that I am keeping my paws crossed for my boy Astro to get better soon!!!"
