Just this week; the Dude has decided that drinking from the toilet is easier than bending down for her water bowl. Now I have to train Myself to keep my toilet lid closed. Ugh. Maybe I'll buy her one of those raised bowls for food and water? Or maybe loo water is cooler and refreshing, but geeze it's gross.

That's so funny you posted this.. I was just talking to my friend about how years ago we didn't 'worry' about our dogs as much as most people do today...there was no 'special food', no such thing as allergies in dogs, heck they hardly ever went to the vet, and THEY DRANK FROM THE TOILET! This just grosses me out... in fact, my parents used to leave it open on purpose in case the dog got thirsty when we weren't home. They could have gotten sick from bacteria or the chemicals used to clean the bowl.... OMG! How shameful - glad to say that none of that was MY idea - I was just a mere child - what did I know then? But NOW....
I honestly think it is because the loo is fresher and cooler most of the time. I taped a note to the toilet lid that says "unless you like toilet water kisses, please close the lid". Also, just a reminder, until you and everyone else gets trained to close the lid all the time, don't use any drop in cleaners in the toilet.
Even my cat (7 lbs) likes the cold water from the toilet. Keep the lid down or better yet, keep the bathroom door closed. That keeps them out of the wastebasket, too.
My cats can also be found trying to get to the water in the toilet.
This is so funny. The first time my tall doodle drank from the toilet, we were at my mom's house for a family party. We were just commenting on how well behaved my 1 year old pup was being despite the fact that there were so many new people there for him to pester. Well, about 2 minutes later, I heard my husband yelling from my mother's bathroom, "No no no!! He's drinking from the toilet!!" Had I been the one to make this discovery, I would have just kept it as a little secret between my doodle and myself. =) I use the raised bowls and Seamus loves them, but I don't think it will deter from toilet drinking.
I was not surprised when Vern started doing this exact same thing, but I was shocked to see Fudge having a drink of toilet water. She is so ladylike and will not even drink out of the water bowl after messy Vern finishes, but I quess, the toilet water is better than Vern water :)
yes--i think the elevated feeders would help. Might as well get two--the other for food. I have had a set for Ella for a while and she has told me she definitely prefers the raised bowls. Those doodle legs are tall. It's probably a lot easier for them to eat too.
Orvis has a large selection--and they go on sale often. http://www.orvis.com/store/search_results.aspx?keyword=raised+feeder
I guess I'm lucky . A number of "uh,uhs" cured that habit. But it does help that there's a water bowl nearby and the new, about 6 months , toilet has a deep bowl with a low water level.
I'm an "older" dog owner and have made the decision that (if I fail to awake one morning) it's better that my dogs drink from the toilet, than die of thirst.
I love it!
I totally agree. I also frequently remind my family that if something happens to me they need to remember the dogs need help ASAP. Good reason to take care of ourselves : )
