Our friends are on a vacation back east and we are minding their dogs. They still raise pure-bred Maltese (we have retired from raising dogs) and they have five Maltese (two males and three females). They also have a massive black Labrador named Gunner who must weigh a hundred pounds - some of it fat but most of it muscle. We have four Maltese of our own and a twenty-five pound tomcat, named Felix. And. of course, we have our darling eight and a half month old Goldendoodle, Holly.
Our home is very well set up for dogs. The house is all tile and we live on a fenced acre which we can separate into a back portion and a front portion. We also have a room which Judy now uses as a hobby room, that is excellent for dogs.
We are doing very well, mostly thanks to Holly and Gunner. They love each other and since (thankfully) the weather has been very mild (in the mid 70's mostly) both Holly and Gunner spend most of the day playing and sleeping in the yard.
We are so lucky that these two big dogs are so friendly, Gunner finished his food yesterday before Holly finished hers, he came to sniff Holly's bowl and she just kissed him. When I said, "No Gunner!" he just wandered off.
Both of the big dogs are great with the Maltese. Neither are territorial nor are they possessive. Holly was chewing a hoof when a Maltese puppy came up, interested in the hoof. Holly, just let the pup take it and then reclaimed the hoof as soon as the puppy tired of it. We have multitudes of hoofs and toys all over the house.
Last night we had ten of the eleven Maltese sleeping on our couches with us as we watched football. Another Maltese was sleeping on Holly's bed and Holly and Gunner were sharing his bed.
We are sure happy to have a Goldendoodle. Although Gunner's owners have clipped him down very close he still sheds and he has a doggy odor even though he is clean. We have really been spoiled with Holly and the Maltese because of the lack of shedding and absolutely no doggie odor.
Our cat is not thrilled to have Gunner visiting. Even though the big Lab shows no interest in Felix, the cat keeps his distance and prefers the garage to the house. He doesn't seem to mind the extra Maltese. I don't think he can either count or tell them apart.
We will have our guests for another week and things are working out just fine.
One slight problem; when Gunner and Holly wake up early in the morning - its play time - in a big dog way! Every one wakes up.
We always know that we have a place for our dogs when we go on vacation if we don't go in our RV (we take them all in the RV). The cat stays home and a neighbor stops by twice daily to feed him and give him some attention.
I hope i can have more than two dogs... well, we just have Nala now but you knew that since you responded to my discussion... but do you guys have kids? that would add in more stress i'm sure! we're planning on 4-6 kids, and so after another dog fits in, who knows if we'll be wanting to handle more!
Kids are all grown now and very successful. However, eleven dogs and a cat are easier than a couple of kids....
On-the-other-hand; somehow, Holly and the big Lab got all excited last night as we were watching the USC - Ohio State football game. I guess our cheering and yelling and the crowd noise got them going.
Anyway, I had Holly chase her laser beam for five or six laps around our big yard and that settled her down. The dogs are really good at night - until full light in the morning and then they are all raring to go!
Holly will be very sorry to see her friends go home on Thursday but, the cat is counting the hours. He is petrified of the big Lab who has never paid him the least bit of attention.
WOW! I thought I was crazy for having my Sisters 2 dogs (Basset-beagle mix and a Shiba Inu) this weekend.
That brings my total to 4 dogs and my 3 cats.
We are also lucky that all the animals get along, and we have chewys everywhere.
One weird thing is my one of my Sisters dog sleeps on top of my sofa, like a cat.
Last night DH was out and I had 4 dogs and a cat on the bed with me....until he came home. They go home Sunday night.
wow i've only watched 2 doodles at a time with my 2 doodles and we also have one cat. I cannot imagine your crew hahhaaa!!!
never a dull moment for sure!
