It is ironic that Frannie just posted the discussion about her Kindle, because I am currently trying to decide between the Nook and Kindle. For all of you owners, what do you like, and dislike about your choice? And a totally different question... can you browse other things like facebook, gmail, etc. on the wifi models? Thanks in advance!

UPDATE

We chose to buy the kindle 3, with 3g. It is AMAZING! I can't believe how much like a book the screen is. Also, the internet is way amazing. I can go to Google images, Facebook, doodlekisses, any of the sites that I assumed I wouldn't be able to. Of course, it's in black and white but it's still cool. I don't really plan to do any browsing beyond e-mail and looking up numbers or addresses but it's nice to know that it works so well! It is WAY easy to put the pdfs I already own onto it. I just plug it into my computer and copy it into the folder. Tada! I am so excited to continue reading. Thank you everyone for your suggestions!

I have the Kindle 2 and understand there is an internet capability although I haven't used/tried it yet. Like others have said, the keyboard is very small and I can't imagine it would be very user friendly for that purpose. With that being said, I bought it to read books on and am very pleased with it for that purpose. The only thing I miss is being able to "leaf" back through the pages if I'm looking for something or to refresh my memory on something. As far as the Nook, it does have those couple other features (library, lending), but when trying to decide between them...I couldn't, so just went with the original that I had heard the most about (KIndle). Borders also came out with one recently. My neighbor ordered it for her hubby, but he returned it and got the Kindle.
Great topic and there is much debate about it. If you google Kindle vs. Nook you can get side by side comparisons of features for each. I have a Nook and, for reading, I would buy a Nook again over both Kindle and Ipad. My sister has ipad and from what she told me....the ereader in it does not have the "digital ink" screen that the other two have. This means when you read the ipad, it looks and glows like a computer screen. That would kill my eyes. The Nook and Kindle have what's called digital ink which looks just like paper and ink of a book. This is why you still need light to read these.
Another reason i love Nook, the software is always being updated. I got mine when they first came out and there have been many improvements. They've added audio, games, internet browsing etc. all through software updates that "magically" appear on my Nook. I don't even have to download them.
Nook also allows you to "sideload" material. Don't know about Kindle on that. This means...as long as a document is in pdf or epub format, you can load it on Nook. So, if you have a large document for work or school to read....you can put in on Nook for convenience.
Last thing about Nook is the Barnes and Noble connection. My favorite store of all times. When you go in a BN with Nook, they know you are there. They have free downloads, fun articles and coupons. Usually a percentage off purchase or something free in the cafe just for showing your Nook. My Barnes and Noble also has a Tues. night Nook group with a tech support person leading it. If you have a question on your Nook you can get it answered there and he will show you how to do cool things with your Nook. I have only gone to two sessions and learned a lot. Plus meet other people with Nooks for potential lending.
Ok, I'm done...sorry to babble on and on. Can you tell I love my Nook?? LOL! But really, the ereader concept is great and I'm sure you'll enjoy whichever you pick :-)
I've had my Kindle for quite a while - first gen; got it soon after it came out. LOVE it. I read a lot and I read very fast, so the Kindle is perfect to take on a trip. Don't have to lug around bunches of books.
You CAN get email - you can surf the web, although it is a slow precess, as the Kindle is not specifically designed for that.
I also have the Kindle App on my iPhone and occasionally read on that, although the screen is so much smaller.
Ok - So I've been patiently waiting for my Kindle, until today when I got an email letting me know that my ship date got pushed back from 9-10 to 10-14. NOT OK AMAZON. They've already sent my case, so I have this empty case and now just feel mad. So now I'm looking at the nook. It seems pretty even with the kindle. Some people on here seem to like it a lot.
Here are my questions...
1 - can I buy books from Amazon as well as B&N?
2 - I've heard that B&N is in financial troubles and may be closing their stores. Is it wise to buy from them right now?
3 - should I just get the ipad, as it is the most current technology? (and just suck up the extra expense)
4 - am I just being an impatient brat, and should just wait for the device I originally wanted?

Feedback is greatly appreciated!
I can imagine how frustrating that email must have been. I HATE when that happens to me. I have to tell you that I totally love my IPad. It's like a body part now....it goes everywhere with me. I'm reading more than ever, and I love that I can order books from Apple, B&N, and Kindle. I love the lighted screen....reading in bed in the dark is so much fun. I also like that if I find a passage that I want to save I can just cut/paste it into my "notes" app. I did get the 3G so I have the Internet at my fingertips everywhere....and I do even take it room to room at home. It is clearly more expensive, but I think it's worth every penny. I assure you I am not getting a commission from Apple....I just love my new "toy" that much.
Here's a question the 3G - if I have have wireless at home (and at the office), do I need that version? Do you find that the lighted screen on the ipad makes your eyes tired (that has been my biggest concern). How much memory does yours have?
You don't need 3G to use the reader anywhere. If you don't want to use the Internet anywhere but at home or in your office, you don't need 3G either. It's only if you want it for other places. For example, I used it to access the Internet the whole time we were on vacation. I got the maximum memory, but that's only because I have thousands of songs in my library, and I wanted to be able to listen to them on the IPad. I also have lots of pictures loaded, and I use the IPad for slideshows. For most people, that extra memory probably isn't necessary.
Oops, forgot to answer your question on the lighted screen. I actually love it and it doesn't make my eyes tired at all. You can adjust the brightness so that it is comfortable for your eyes and the lighting in the room.
Ditto Jane...I love mine too and it goes everywhere with me!!!
The only drawback I can see to the iPad (which I own and love and also own the first generation Kindle), is that it sucks in the sunlight. The Kindle, and from what I have heard Nook, are great outdoors. But, the iPad is color and awesome at that where the others are black and white. I guess it comes down to using it outdoors and color and what and where your uses will be.
Right now, I'd be using it mostly indoors (unless I took it to the dog park with me, or to a tennis match). I feel SO torn!
Do you know anyone with an IPad or do you have an Apple store near you? Maybe you need to actually look at the different options (Kindle, Nook and IPad) to better understand what "feels" right for you.
