We normally cook London broil, white potatoes, carrots and sweet potatoes (all with skins left on) in a slow cooker and then process it in a Cuisinart food processor to make the topping for our dogs kibble.  Holly doesn't do well on kibble so we just give a half cup of the topping along with her ration of Nature's Variety Beef patties.  All the dogs just love this combination.

However, I had some neat fish, left over in my freezer.  Pacific Yellowtail that my son-in-law had caught as well as some salmon left over from my trip to Alaska.  We didn't like the taste of the yellowtail and the salmon was a bit strong.  Although there was absolutely nothing unhealthy about either fish.

I baked the fish and then microwaved four small white potatoes as well as three sweet potatoes along with ten or twelve carrots.  I processed all of this in the Cuisinart along with a half can of crushed pineapple. Our rescue dogs often have a poop eating problem. The pineapple is "supposed" to make poop unappetizing for dogs.  We have used meat tenderizer as per our vet but, I figured that the pineapple couldn't hurt as long as the dogs would eat it.

They absolutely love the mixture - pineapple and all.  It looks like I am going to do quite a bit more fishing soon.  Pacific mackerel are a very plentiful fish but, rather strong in taste and oily.  This is exactly the type of fish that the dogs love and is also the type of fish that is most healthy.  I wish that I could stomach that variety (these fish are packed with omega-3)  but, the fishy taste is just too strong.  However, they are quite easily caught either from a local pier of from a local party boat and the dogs love them.

I am also going to try using yams and pumpkin as they become inexpensive around Halloween and Thanksgiving.

Sounds good - you have some luck doggies!!!
This is good. We always have to mix Huff's food with something because he doesn't like dog food much. The only thing is that fish makes his beard and moustache smell and he doesn't like it very much. I wish I could try this though, I'm sure he would like it, he just doesn't like the fishy smell. haha:) If anyone has any suggestions on mixes or toppings for food that is fairly easy to prepare please share!
Jackdoodle loves any kind of fish. I often broil a small filet and add that to his dinner kibble. He loves canned salmon & tuna as well. The chunk light tuna has about half the mercury of the albacore, and dogs like it better, anyway. Any kind of fish is great for dogs, as long as it's well cooked.
As a side note, fish is a traditional food for Labrador Retrievers.
Peri goes bananas for fish - sounds like Holly is a lucky dood. Did her sibling Malteses get the same dinner?
I've been topping with plain cooked ground chicken this week (with pumpkin on the side - "dessert"). I've noticed the girls are a little gassy as they first digest it. The kibble I'm feeding is Solid Gold Wolf King and Wolf Cub respectfully. But my order of Fromm is on the way. Lucky is nearly 10 months old and now Maples adult size so I'm going to transition to the "all life stages" Chicken a la veg. It will be easier to have one kibble for both dogs.
Anyway...Is London Broil less gas producing than chicken?
Depends on your dog. Cutting it up really small helps, too, whether it's chicken or meat.
guess it probably the dog :(
Yes... Although we don't feed Holly any kibble we feed the adult Maltese a combination of Taste of the Wild Salmon and Science Diet Canine WD kibble flavored with a liberal dose of whatever topping we are using. The Maltese rescue puppies eat Purina Pro Plan Puppy Kibble for Toy Breeds with no topping.

We were up to 17 rescue puppies in five separate litters along with 7 adult rescue Maltese. Eleven of the puppies have been adopted (although six are still too young to leave us) and three of the adults have been adopted. We have another adult male coming in this weekend.

Holly gets her topping alone due to her seeming inability to digest kibble consistantly. Holly's basic food is Nature's Variety Beef Patties. We feed her one to one and a half patties each day depending on how much topping we feed her. Topping is a rather loose term - it could be a total food with the ingredients in it. Holly is doing extremely well on her diet. All the Maltese are also doing well. With this number of dogs, loose stool can be a very serious clean-up problem.

By the way, we have no gas problem either which is another thing for which we are thankful. We would need gas masks if all the dogs were flatulent.
Wow,Richard, you are inspirational! I would love to have you fix that London Broil scramble for us! The fish smell is a challenge. No can do.
Yap. I use fish every so often, too! Frozen Whiting fish is pretty cheap and easy o thier stomach!
Though not as fancy, my girl loves plain yogurt and cottage cheese. We top her grain free kibble with either one at meal time. She had an issue with year infections...which have cleared since we have given the yogurt. Upon further investigation.....it appears food allergies are linked to ear infections in dogs. Hence the grain free. No more itching. Mystery solved. Just a few of the many wonderful things we can do for our precious ones using a more natural approach!
