Baking soda is okay, but I don't know if I would want vinegar or soap in my mattress. Camilla, did the vinegar smell go away?
Suzann, do you have a bottle of Nature's Miracle in the house?
I would be happy to call Ruby's mom for you and tell her she owes you a new mattress.
I've used a diluted vinegar and water mix (50/50) to clean up urine before (when kids get the carpet after bath, etc) -- it doesn't seem to leave an odor and seems to cancel the urine smell.
Yep, it did. The baking soda is really what made the difference though. We left it on for a few hours and the smell was pretty much gone. Perhaps, you should use the baking soda then use nature's miracle?
thank you, we certainly can't afford one after Bandit's vacation at the vet. I did spray PetStatic, it says it's the same formula as NM but just sold under a different name, there's a whole story on the back of the bottle, don't have time to share the detail of that now:)
Well, you might try the old remedy for skunk spray. You mix a bottle of hydrogen peroxide with a box of baking soda and add a cup of dishwashing detergent. We have used it for when a skunk spraying the bottom of our deck (and the dog through the deck), when a skunk sprayed my husband's leg and his bicycle when he was mountain biking, and when a skunk sprayed our wall. Works well, and takes away all the smell. Brush the mixture on with a toothbrush, air it out to dry and then finish drying with a hairdryer. Worth a try. That is what I would do.
OMG this is not getting any better, I just got the shop vac out and finally found the extension cord, why in the world do they only put a 3 foot cord on these things. I turned it on and it was in "blow" mode and it sprayed a bunch of crap all over the room and the dogs, because of course they are trying to help... AGGHH I think these doodles are trying to kill me!
OMG! Suzann! YOU deserve the SAINT award of the Year! First poor Bandit, now this! I don't know what would be worse for me.... the fact that I'd freak out over dog pee on my bed, (I don't even let my kids sit on their beds w/ school clothes on - did I ever mention I'm a germ freak), or the fact that my DH would find out! I think the latter! I don't know if I'd do the vinegar.... the smell might tip him off.... try just washing it down with baking soda and water or better yet hydrogen peroxide and water, or club soda - something to neutralize the acidity of the pee, and put a towel on top of it with something heavy on it to soak it out. Keep replacing the towel as it draws the liquid out... you may have a lot of towel laundry, but it's worth the "what are you freakin' kidding me" response I would get from my DH... LOTS of LUCK! I'll be following you!!!
Thank you Shelly. Somewhere in the back of my mind I am thinking I could have my own reality show. Suzann + 3 doods. And it would star Me, R&B and every week we would have a star doodle. Some weeks we could do a rescue/foster, other a doodle friend. I tell ya you can't make this stuff up! So, I have already sprayed vinegar, too late for that. I am going to put HP & Baking soda on it now. The shop vac ain't doin' squat so I am honestly thinking I am going to have to try and get that matress outside on the deck or it will never dry....
This is like the worst couple of days ever for you....I'm so sorry. Once you think the smell is out (and the vinegar, HP and Baking soda should do that), you can dry it as much as possible with the towels. Then when it's just damp, try your hair dryer. Just don't put it on "high", because you certainly don't want to catch the mattress on fire (and the way your luck is running, that's a possibility). I use my hair dryer for lots of "unorthodox" things. My advice....this really is something your DH is better off not knowing...you're doing it for him...to spare him. I agree the peeing is about territory. We had that incident with Guinness a couple months ago. He peed all over the bedding (but not on the mattress itself) because he was mad that Murphy could jump up on the bed and he couldn't. Once we got him "the stairs" the problem went away. Good luck. I wish we lived closer, so I could do something constructive to help. Good luck!
I just sprayed another does of NM on it, I have almost used the whole bottle. I really don't want to tell DH, he will ban all future playdates. I had no idea this dog would have done this... And I am assuming it was her, I guess it could have been Rosey, I really don't think it was Bandit. Oh geez, I don't even know if it matters!! 4 hours to go to clean the scene of the crime.

BTW, how did Guiness pee on the bedding but not the mattress. This pee went straight thru the bedding into the mattress...
It was early in the morning before I made the bed. The bedding was sort of "hanging off the side", and he lifted his leg and peed all over it.
Oh, that just gave me another idea. Do you have the ShamWow or something similar? We use them to dry after the dogs after a bath. The just squeeze them around the legs and they soak up the moisture. We love them. Anyway, after you wash the stain area with HP/baking soda/detergent, then use the ShamWow to wipe up the moisture, and then dry with the hairdryer. I'm going to remember this if we ever have the "opportunity" to use it.
