Fish Oil - which brand and how much?

Hi All,

While researching Fish oil supplement for Berry, I am coming across the differences in the ingredients in different brands...or is there? Honestly, I did give any thoughts when I started taking fish oil supplements and I my DH husband is finding it very hard that I am spending so much time figuring out the ingredients now:-) Maybe I am dissecting way too much than necessary...Tell me stop if you all think so too:-)

 

Here is what i found - it is necessary to preserve the fish oil with Vitamin E(tocopheol) which can be derived from soy. However, i read somewhere that this is so purified that there is really no soy protein. Some brands claim explicitly claim no soy eventhough there is Vitamin E mentioned, some list soy in ingredient list and some do not even mention it. I am worried about adding soy when I make sure so cautious to buy any treats with no corn, no wheat, no soy etc.

What do u all think and what brands are you all using for your dogs? And what is the amount?

I also started to investigate fish oil supplements for Camus. I have not purchased one for Camus yet, still investigating, however the brand I take myself is Nordic Naturals. They have pet specific versions, here are a couple of links from the Nordic Naturals Pet website:

Our vet said to give him 2 fishoil tablets for human consumption.............huh. They are cheaper.

Yes, I have searched in the main page and got tons of information... read thro' almost everything. But i did not find this specifice information about soy (something to worry about here), and what brands are recommended and everybody are using safely...if at all it matters. Soy is the main concern to me since I do not want to add anything now which has reputation of causing allergy since Berry might be allergic...not figured out what yet.

They do require some Omega 6, although much less than Omega 3. Both are essential fatty acids which the body does not make and must be obtained from food. Certain forms of Omega 6, particularly GLA, have been shown to reduce inflammation in certain diseases.
You are right about the Omega 9, the body makes its own.

I give my dogs the same fish oil that I take. It's gnc's brand that says 300 mg. I give my dogs one a day. A friend of mine gives hers 2 a day. I don't think that there is a hard and fast rule for the amount. There isn't a set amount for adults.

I bought some "pregnancy fish oil" at the grocery store because it was on sale, and I figured that if it's good enough for pregnant women, well...

And I just give the capsule right to Ruby, she eats it like a treat! Very strange.

Just remember if the fish oil ends up not agreeing with her (loose bowels), you can use Evening Primrose Oil.
