I just watched the Animal Planet show exposing puppy mills and Petland, I had it on DVR. I can not believe that people treat living creatures like those puppies are treated....they are cruel and heartless and should be put in cages themselves....as far as Petland is concerned, I will never even walk into one of their stores again. I do not for one second believe that Petland was not aware of the puppy mill sources they were buying from; any vendor qualifies their suppliers, their reputation depends on the products they sell..Petland was just out for the almighty buck and I hope they get what they deserve!
I think the reason why there are still so many puppy mills in business is due to the huge amount of ignorant people. Not because the strategy of not buying from a pet store isn't working. Buying a puppy from a pet store gives money to puppy mills. PERIOD. If you buy a dog from there, you are in a very real way supporting puppy mills.
The fact is, there are a lot of people who have committed to not buying from pet stores, but many, MANY more who don't care or don't know, who DO still buy. That is why it's important to spread the word. Because if more people become informed, less money will be going to pet stores and puppy mills. It's a long process. I think that spreading the word, and doing what we can to lobby and get laws in place is going to work in concert with not supporting the stores selling puppies.
I was one of those ignorant people - Samantha came from a pet store (not Petland) here in NJ from a small PMer in SD. I tried to make myself believe that I 'rescued' her but the truth is that they replaced her with another doodle puppy just as fast as she was out the door.
Breaks my heart to think what her siblings and parents life is like - I can't change what I did but I can sure as heck make sure that everyone I meet hears about PMs and pet stores. Maybe that is why I was where I was, when I was and found Samantha - to find DK, meet Jacquie, learn about PMs and spread the word to save more.
And when I say ignorant people, I am not trying to imply that they are bad people. Obviously they aren't. I also bought ignorantly, from a back yard breeder. No health testing, etc. I think that there are just so many people out there who don't know where the puppies from pet stores come from. Their hearts are in the right place, but they just don't know what they are contributing to. It's very sad that puppy mills prey on this kind of person, but they do.
That is why it's our job to educate people about what we know. I can't think of a better example of someone who educates and helps than you Adrianne. :-)
Charli was supposed to go to Petland. TG she was born with an umbilical cord hernia and this one particular amish Puppy Miller surrendered her to a rescue in Antwerp, Ohio instead of killing her. The Amish usually (close your eyes if you have a weak stomach) just break the necks of puppies that are not perfect for Petland.
How I got so lucky to have found Charli and to be approved to adopt her I will never know but I thank the stars above that I did.
What really enraged me is that fact that all the "breeders" had an email tree, and they sent out a mass email alerting everyone else that this guy was coming and to not let him in.
