Himalayan Dog Chews
Any Doodles tried a Himalayan Dog Chew? I saw that my Pet Boutique is selling them. It looks interesting, but I also read that it is a bit smelly. This is what I found when I googled it:
What is it?
In the Himalayas, the chew comes from an ancient recipe that is used by the locals to create a long-lasting snack that they can slowly work in their mouths while they are working in the fields.

We had a discussion here about them over a year ago. Some people were very happy with them. As you will see, I had quite a bit iof trouble understanding what they were, lol.

I thought it was a new product!!!! I guess not... Allie would probably LOVE it, as she love anything SMELLY. But it would probably give her diarreah anyway!!!!

I would be concerned about that, too, but the people who tried it in the above discussion had no problems. However, their dogs don't have sensitive digestive systems. Hard cheese with lime juice just doesn't sound like anything Jackdoodle would even eat. And since he can demolish a three foot long bully stick in about 20 minutes, I really doubt these would last very long if he did like them.

Whopper absolutely loves them. She has only had one twice. I don't remember much of a smell, especially compared to some bully sticks but it does get kind of gross once it gets small but overall I'd recommend it as a great chew.

Lucca likes these. I never experienced the smell. I do take it away when it gets small though. When he was younger I lodged one end of it into a kong. then I knew he couldn't eat the last 2 inches or so. It actually worked quite well. I also bought the large size. They aren't cheap so I figure the bigger the better!!!

I just got a few of these for the girls. It took a few days for them to check them out, but they like them. They take a long time to eat, much longer then a Bully Stick or Trachea. It is VERY hard. They have to work at it for a while to wet it enough so they are slowly scraping off pieces when they bite. What I like is that Veruca, who is MUCH pickier in what she enjoys to chew on, is interested in it. (She doesn't really go for bones, is only mildly interested in Bully sticks/tendons or tracheas.)
I ordered them from Best Bully Sticks, and got the Large/Jumbo Mixed chews pack... it had three about 6 inches long and with the diameter of a quarter. -

I like the fact that it lasts so long. I found a store near me that sells them, so I might give one a try. I'm not optimistic, though...Mr. Picky-fussy has turned up his big nose at treats most dogs go nuts over.

I know Allie would probably like it for a couple of hours.... but I'm just worried about the "outcome!" LOL. Maybe we will try it as well. We have been getting Trach's for her, and she loves them - but they only last 10 minutes! We will get one next time we are there!

ok so I finally did it!!!! I got Allie a Himalayan Dog Chew and she went CRAZY for it. Seriously - I came home with it at 11:00am and it was 1/2 gone 20 minutes later so I took it away to freeze for now. We will see how she does with it as the day progresses (if you know what I mean - LOL). I don't know that 40 minutes of chewing is worth the $10. I guess once in awhile will be ok... but I'm still searching for the irresistible LONG LASTING dog chews.

I have to remember to look for these, although Jack probably won't eat it...and 0 minutes of chewing is definitely not worth $10. But there is nothing that lasts more than 15 minutes with JD...not bully sticks, not beef tendons...he did spend 30 minutes with a beef trachea once, but those give him really loose stools if he gets them too often.
Since I currently pay $7 for 15 minutes of chewing (the tendons), I'd happily pay for the Himalayan chew...but I am pretty sure he won't touch it. His groomer gave him a Trick or Treat bag of gourmet cookies this week...they look and smell like cookies from the finest human bakery. There's even biscotti, lol. He spits them out. -

Allie is obsessed with the chew. I let her have about 10 minutes while we were out raking - it was frozen, so she didn't chew much off... but she jumps and tries to take it out of our hand when we are putting it away.
I asked the owner of the boutique if it smelled and he said no, that Bully Sticks top his list of smelliest... My house smells like cheese.
Jack just knows what he wants... lol
I have DH cut the trach's into 5 sections with his saw so Allie doesn't get too much - because she gets really loose stools with them as well. -
