What's Up With Phoebe UPDATE

Phoebe vomited on Saturday morning--just bile (sorry)--and then proceeded to have a normal and action packed day.  She did the same thing yesterday morning and still had a totally normal day filled with regular eating of her food and treats and lots of energy.  I was praying that that might be the end of it BUT she did the same thing this morning at 5am!  I do not know what to make of it at all and I plan to contact her vet this morning as soon as the office opens.  I am really perplexed as she is vomiting in her crate but as soon as I take her out she is fine--happy, energetic, her usual wonderful self.  She has never had any crate issues and she is not anxious about being in there at all.  She loves it, actually.  Any and all comments welcome from doodle lovers!  I need help!

 

UPDATE--I fed Phoebe almost an hour later last night plus gave her a favorite pumpkin treat at 9pm  (she is crated by 11pm).  She was fine this morning!  Hopefully, this tactic will continue to do the trick.  Thanks for all the great advice.

Because she seems fine otherwise, and it is happening in the early am, I would guess it is an empty stomach type thing. Maybe try giving her a little snack right at bedtime so her stomach doesn't get so empty. Knowing me, I'd also probably call my vet just to ask, but if she is playing, eating, drinking, and otherwise happy I wouldn't worry too much. I'm sure you will get some other responses from some that are a lot more experienced than me on this as well.

I think it's a great idea to call the Vet, but I really don't think the early morning vomiting of bile in our Doodles is that unusual. There have been lots of postings on other dogs with this similar issue. My guys do it on occasion, and it's always very early in the morning. The real question in my mind is "does she vomit at other times during the day as well"? If not, it can probably be prevented by giving her something light to eat right at bedtime. This way there is something in her stomach in the morning, and it usually prevents them from vomiting the bile. Let us know how you make out.

How old is she? Gavin has the same issue when he was younger, but has more or less grown out of it. Everyone is right on with the snack before bedtime. This helped Gavin alot.

We had this issue with Chapin too - and the vet told us it was from going to bed hungry. We give him a snack before bedtime now, and it stopped immediately.

I knew I could count on you all! Thanks. I called the vet as I am pretty intense and I am awaiting a call back. I will run the snack past the vet to see what she says but I tend to agree with you all. She is 20 months old right now and to answer the question, no she does not vomit any of her food during the day at all. Hopefully, a small snack later in the evening will solve the problem. In Porter's case, he was on Zantac in the evening all last December and I eventually tapered him off. He was pretty bad before I put him on the meds, burping all night and barfing bile several times during the night and early morning. It started after he raided some cooked spicy chicken trash at my sister's house.
He had a week-long spell of it again a month or so ago, and this time, I gave him Pepcid. No trigger I am sure of this time.
I always check with the vet (whose questions are "Is it food or yellow fluid? and "Is he pooping, playing and eating normally?"), I give a minimal dose, and taper him off it, which means giving him a microscopic white pill crumb wrapped in bread.

Small snack did the trick for us - she gets a Sojo treat (bone shaped; about 1" long) before bedtime each night. (she's a mini).

My ALD does this often also--I will try the snack as he usually eats dinner quite early (4 pm).

OMG! Charlie is doing the same thing. I had question posted on the health group... She was vomiting starting with bile, and some partically digested food, starting Friday and up to this morning. Always in the early morning... She went to vet this afternoon, and Dr. Sweeny did not think it was an urgent matter. He gave her a shot to clam her stomach down, and gave her oral medication to take for 5 days. She is now back on bland diet, and I hope she wont bring it up tomorrow morning. ( That's what she did on sunday morning and this morning.) He told me to give her no more than 3/4 cup of bland diet at time, and she can eat that for up to 3 times per day tomorrow. He said to give him a call back if she is not keeping her food down for next 2 days. I hope Phoebe fells better soon, too!! it must be some sort of stomach bugs going around!!

Dakota used to have a similar issue - she would vomit a couple times a week in the morning. It was pretty obvious when it would happen, either she would get up in the morning and bee-line to the door and out to start gagging, or during the morning walk she would start chewing on some grass and then do the vomit thing. Then after it was done everything was normal, like nothing was wrong whatsoever.

At first we thought that it would most often happen the morning after she was aggressively playing with stuffed toys - i.e. we thought that maybe she had ingested some of the stuffing and was finally gagging it out. But we never really saw any indication of anything coming out. The real interesting thing was about 3 months ago we gradually changed her food from nutro to fromms (thanks to the insight from the "food group" here). I kid you not - ever since she changed we have not had another vomit incident. Still plays aggressively with toys, does everything the same, only the base food has changed. Just another possible angle for you...
